The Gingrich/Powell Flap
always did smell fishy. It wouldn't surprise me at all if Gingrich was made the fall guy to see how the notion of reorganizing the state department (and thus ditching Colin Powell) would fly with the public.
Obviously it didn't work. Powell isn't Trent Lott in that regard. He has some prestige left, what there is of it.
