Stupid, stupid, stupid
idiots in Congress. While the new special education reforms supposedly will help in diagnosing and treating kids needing special education help earlier, Democrats are right as usual that it will undercut parents' concerns and would allow schools to mistreat kids by suspending them. In other words, it's another excuse by Republicans to screw kids in order to provide tax cuts to those who don't need it.
While the House rejected any notion of private school vouchers for parents of children in "low-performing" schools (i.e., 99 percent of them), it approved the proposal parents could use vouchers to pay for private tutoring. It sounds like a handout to Sylvan Learning Centers or other outfits. The trouble is, students who need remedial help need QUALIFIED people to teach them and get them up to speed.
Worse yet, the House rejected increases in special education funding. The kids who need help the most will get it the least. All in the excuse kids were being "dumped" in special education when they shouldn't be. However, the proposal only goes to show that people who make educational decisions have never taught a day in their lives and don't have a stinking clue of what goes on. Yet they gleefully tell school districts and teachers what to do.
