Ned Lamont's expected win in last night's primary, I fully expect Joe Lieberman to beat the shit out of him in November.

As well he should. I will never, ever forgive the "left" blogosphere for undermining an established Democratic politician to try and illustrate some idiotic point while giving Republicans ammo.

Both of my sisters do not like Joe Lieberman for much of the same reasons the nutroots hates him, but a lot of why they hate him is of course based on calculated distortions by the nutroots. I took the contrary position, that I thought a loss was bad for the Democratic Party because of the opening it gives the Republicans on the issues of the war on terra, Iraq, etc.

But Lamont has peaked. Lieberman screwed up with the campaign by not taking him or the nutroots seriously, but now is comeback time.

Instead, a reluctant Lamont meandered through a clipped version of his stump speech. He seemed to downplay the incredible win he had just achieved. It was a missed opportunity. After all, just minutes before, Lieberman, instead of giving a concession speech, launched his general election campaign. Lamont had--and may still have--a small window to shut that campaign down, but he is off to a bad start. The overall effect of the dueling speeches--with Lieberman ignoring the fact he lost and Lamont ignoring the fact he won--was to greatly diminish Lamont's victory. This bit of theater worked so well for Lieberman that, on an early morning edition of "Hardball," Chris Matthews treated Sean Smith, Lieberman's campaign manager, as if he had just scored a brilliant victory. "How did you guys close the gap?" Matthews asked, clearly impressed.

Some Democratic Senators will endorse Lamont this morning, but don't expect much more than a press release. The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee has no intention of throwing any real money at Lamont. "This race will have zero bearing on who controls the Senate after Election Day in November," says a top Democrat involved in Senate campaign strategy. "Why would we spend money defending a seat that will be blue either way? It just takes funds from important seats like Montana. It's counterproductive to the cause." The message to Lamont? If you want the seat so bad, spend your own money: "The fact of the matter is that Lamont has seven million dollars he can draw on."

I noticed James Carville last night was a bit lukewarm about a Lamont nomination, which tells me the party pretty much supports Lieberman, who despite his wrongheaded stance on Iraq and a couple of other issues, IS a loyal Democrat.

He'll run as an "independent," of course, and then, when he is re-elected, switch back to being a Democrat.

Senator Dodd gives Lamont some lip service.

It's calculated to pacify the nutroots, but I don't expect anybody in his or her right mind to work against the incumbent.

Work on your fucking state Democrats, you lying piece of shit.

Methinks the Lamont people are being just a little, well, obvious that they are tanking.

Bloggers aren't even smart enough to know they are being played for fools by the Democratic establishment.

Lamont will never win the Senate seat.

The media, however, want to peddle the bullshit Democrats are "united" behind Lamont.

Sure they are. Sure they are. Since all but the most demented among them believe Lieberman will easily win re-election, they are merely giving Lamont lip service support.

In other words, they don't want to piss off the "base" of idiot bloggers doing the Republicans' handiwork for them, but on the other hand, they don't want to piss off the vast numbers of independents and Republicans in that state who appreciate the incumbent's willingness to work across the aisle, even when he pisses people like me off.
