Valerie Biden Owens will be at Democratic Headquarters (hey, her brother bought the sign for our new digs) on Tuesday, August 7th, and feature as a speaker for our monthly meeting. Valerie has managed every campaign of her brother, Senator Joe Biden, in his 30 year political career - from his 1970 victory in the "unwinnable" race for a council seat in New Castle County, Delaware, through six straight victorious Senate campaigns to his quest for the 1988 Democratic presidential nomination.
Since that time, Senator Biden's campaigns have yielded winning margins in closely divided Delaware that ranged from 58% to an unprecedented 64% of the vote.In 2002, Senator Biden celebrated his sixth straight victory, and has represented Delaware in the United States Senate longer than any other elected Senator in the state.
Valerie is one of the first American women to manage a modern political campaign for national office, and she was recruited to join the political consulting firm of Joe Slade White & Co. She also serves on the National Board of the Women's Leadership Forum of the Democratic National Committee. Like her brother, she is well-versed on the current state of the debate on the war in Iraq in the Senate, and she is prepared to present and debate Joe Biden's positions across the range of issues. She is a lively and passionate speaker; come meet her at our office next Tuesday!
I will try to be there, but I can't guarantee it.
However, I WILL be at this event:
There will be a "Meet Michelle Obama" event at 12:00PM on Thursday, August 9th at the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts, 100 S. Virginia Street. The event is free and open to the public.
Michelle has been instrumental in developing a nationwide network of women who support Barack Obama (barackobama.com/women), including right here in Northern Nevada. The local chapter of Women for Obama is very active in engaging women voters in the political process, publicizing Senator Obama's stances on issues that specifically impact women, representing the campaign at local events, and recruiting women to take leadership roles in the grassroots field program.
The Women for Obama group is pleased to welcome Michelle to Northern Nevada for the first time and is eager to hear about her experience and wisdom as a successful lawyer, healthcare professional, public servant and mother. Assemblywoman Sheila Leslie will accompany her on her visit.
Michelle received a B.A.from Princeton University in 1985 and her law degree from Harvard in 1988. She left the corporate law world in 1991 to pursue a career in public service, serving as an assistant to the mayor and then as the assistant commissioner of planning and development for the City of Chicago. In 1993, she became the founding executive director of Public Allies, a leadership ty program, making them both integral parts of the Medical Center's mission.
Michelle married Barack Obama On October 18, 1992, and they have two daughters.
Unfortunately, her husband appears to have stuck his foot in it again.
At the rate Obama is going, his campaign may be over with by Labor Day.
Speaking of wives, it's now Judy's turn to be under the microscope.
