Aiming to draw a line under a controversy that has threatened to wreck his bid for the White House, Mr Obama said that Rev Wright did not speak for him or his campaign.
Dismissing the pastor’s performance on Monday at the National Press Club as “a bunch of rants” not “grounded in truth”, Mr Obama said that he had not realized the full extent of the remarks until watching them in full later that evening. On Monday afternoon he had issued a much milder rejection.
At times struggling to contain his emotions, the Illinois senator indicated that he would make a permanent break with the man who turned him on to Christianity.
