John McCain Town Hall Sparks, Nevada

McCain signed my pledge card just as he and Cindy were leaving. Those smudges are his, by the way, not mine. McCain is left-handed as am I, so smudging on signatures is common.

Not all of his answers were popular with the audience.

McCain listens intently to a question.

John McCain makes sure he pronounces "Nevada" right. He said he is the underdog in the race and relishes it.

McCain takes time out for a drink. Of water, of course.

Note the red spot on his right side where he had the skin cancer or whatever it was removed the other day.

Since I was up in the bleachers and used the zoom, some of the pictures were a bit grainy although they are okay. Here is a good shot of McCain at the town hall.

To a crowd of at least several hundred if not a thousand or more at Reed High School in Sparks, Nevada, "special guest" Cindy McCain introduces her husband to an appreciative crowd. What I like about the McCains, no matter how I disagree with their politics, is the fact they are so approachable. I didn't think I'd have a shot at getting John's autograph, and I kept the pledge card just in case I could get it. Well, me being the way that I was, I was at the very end of the rope line just before the McCains were to leave the building, and John did sign my card. I should have asked Cindy to sign it as well.

Just before I forget, Jimbo Gibbons was nowhere to be found. McCain called Lt. Governor Brian Krolicki "governor." Well, he might just as well be.

You will get to hear the remarks when I upload the video on YouTube.

So what was your personal impression of McCain and his wife?

My personal impression is the (past) claim McCain has charm has some validity. He also has a very good sense of humor even if he's told the "drunken sailor" joke a million times. We all know about his legendary temper, but it hasn't been on display in the four times I have seen him in person. He answered all the questions asked of him at the town hall, and not all of his answers went over that great with the audience. He talked about Obama going off public financing, while he pledged he would remain on public financing, his position on immigration didn't always fly with this audience. I think he also didn't give an answer one person in the audience asked about imports from Belarus wanted to hear. McCain was sympathetic to her plight (she imported many items from there), but he believed it was important to stand against dictatorships.

So McCain played the maverick part pretty well. Mostly he reiterated the traditional Republican positions and contrasted himself with Obama.

McCain definitely feels his age. I know he has arthritis as a result of his injuries from decades ago, so he moves much slower.

As for Cindy McCain, she introduced him at the beginning and talked about her recent trip to Rwanda. This is the first time I have seen her in person. She presented herself well, but I think she takes a more traditional approach of being a political wife than that of Michelle Obama. They are a definite contrast in personalities. In the rope line, she took the time to talk and shake hands with people. She was as approachable as her husband.

That's kind of my take on them, Mary Louise, for what it's worth.
