Media Follies

Anybody who would call Obama's shitpile speech of last night the best and most important convention speech of the past 48 years is full of shit, and it's too bad when somebody comes along and tells the truth.

Some of Babington's analysis:

But instead of dwelling on specifics, he laced the crowning speech of his long campaign with the type of rhetorical flourishes that Republicans mock and the attacks on John McCain that Democrats cheer. The country saw a candidate confident in his existing campaign formula: tie McCain tightly to President Bush, and remind voters why they are unhappy with the incumbent.

Of course, no candidate can outline every initiative in a 35-minute speech -- especially one that also must inspire voters, acknowledge key friends, and toss in some autobiography for the newly-interested. And Obama did touch on nitty-gritty subjects, such as the capital gains tax and biofuel investments.

He said he would "find ways to safely harness nuclear power," a somewhat more receptive phrase than he typically uses for that subject.

But most of his address echoed and amplified the theme that dominated the four-day Democratic nominating convention here: George Bush.

What is untrue about this?

Does anybody even remember the goddamned speech now that McCain has picked Palin?

As a long time leftist Democrat, I will support John McCain and Sarah Palin this year.

Obama is nothing but a huckster or carnival barker, a pied piper leading us off a cliff. (Not to say he has any chance of winning. Maybe whining.) Your predictions are dead-on. In 2004 you said Kerry has no chance, but I didn't believe you. Obama cannot and will not win. Not now, not in 50 years. Hillary was the best bet and they threw her to the wolves.

Good (Obama) speech my ass. (Buchanan is deluded.) Babington's (sp?)take is right on. I used to like Olbermann but he is so completely in the tank with the haters. Chris Matthews has that drip up his leg. Michelle Bernard has gone in the tank for Obama as well. Cried in the green room, bah.

No wonder the Democratic Party has hemorraged members and lost 2 elections in a row. They don't get it.

My only beef with Palin is her seemingly incessant love for shooting big game animals and polar bears. But other than that, she is eminently qualified to be vp.

I did say that about Kerry in 2004, although I would argue in the end he did win but for fraud by the other side. However, when he got the nomination I worked very hard for the ticket and had so much fun and great memories of it. I also stopped trashing him when the general campaign got in gear. I felt he was finally getting his act together after some big missteps.

I wish I could do it again this year and work for the Democratic Party ticket. Unfortantely, because of my feeling the voters had no real say over who our candidates would be, that we were being manipulated into voting for one candidate in order to help the other political party, I cannot support Barack Obama. This is despite the fact I have such high regard for Joe Biden. This campaign has been an absolute disaster.

While I certainly understand why many Democrats will continue to vote for the Democratic ticket, even if the presidential nominee isn't really one, and while I can understand why people like you will vote for McCain, I just can't bring myself to vote for either ticket or even third party. In Nevada, there is a spot on the ballot for "none of these candidates" in many of the races. If it's there in November for the presidential race, I am checking that off.
