McCain's choice of Sarah Palin to be vice president is less an effort to get crossover votes from disaffected Clinton supporters as it is to keep the religious right/anti-abortion base. Many of those people were going to stay home because they simply didn't trust McCain. Now they have reason to vote for the ticket.
That's actually the bottom line. It is also a risky decision, especially when Palin has to go up against Joe Biden in the vice presidential debate later this fall.
