The Kiss of Death

Donald Trump has received a big endorsement today, for good or for ill:

I don't think she will be much help for him. If anything, it exposes Trump to even more ridicule.

My stomach hurt very bad from a heartburn attack earlier in the day. It didn't improve any when Trump rambled on and then Sarah blathered word salad that only she could do.

Trump doesn't talk until about 27 minutes into the video.

If you're a public school teacher, you have many, many reasons to be outraged over the "reforms" instituted and are coming down the pike.
_____

In this climate of fear and intimidation, teachers over 50 and veteran teachers are not safe from administrator wrath.

No matter how petty the charges, they will find a way to get rid of teachers as a pure cost-saving measure, just as it was done to me. And if a principal screws up, well, the higher-ups will make sure they defend these nitwits to the hilt.

ALL veteran teachers and all older teachers will be scapegoated and kicked out of the system.

Reno has been in the news quite a bit in the past couple of days. This is a very good piece about the rise and fall of an iconic company.

The site is pay to play but there is free limited access.

Long before the fiscal crisis leading to Chapter 11 bankruptcy, however, ultimate control of the company and its profit left Jackson County. Transition to outside ownership began under John H.R. Holmes, son of the company's namesake Harry Holmes.

Ashland resident John Fox III, vice president of strategic planning when he left the company in 1987, said there was some angst when John Holmes relinquished controlling interest to R.J. Reynolds Development Corp. in a $74.1 million leveraged buyout in1986. Holmes became the company's president in 1968 and took the company public in 1976. Two years later, he and other veteran leaders were gone and RJR Nabisco had sold the company to Shaklee Corp. for $123 million.

"Everyone knows what generally happens after a merger," Fox said. "The new owner puts its own people in and those who were there are winnowed out. I don't think anybody resented Holmes selling, but there was some trepidation about what the new guys were going to do."

To say the least.

A bullshit post in the Daily Kos which was later pulled was the start of a hoax about Sarah Palin being the grandmother of her son Trig rather than actually the mother, which she is.

Frankly, these assholes thought Palin should have aborted the pregnancy because of their extreme distaste that somebody would deliberately have a child with Down syndrome, and it pissed them off to no end that somebody who espoused anti-abortion views actually lived her beliefs.

Now a "report" from a so-called Ph.D. is making the rounds claiming the hoax about Palin being the grandmother of Trig could possibly be the truth and that Palin did commit a hoax by covering up for her daughter Bristol, who just happened to have a baby of her own some ten or 11 months after Trig was born.

In other words, we have an "academic" questioning the story which was a nonstory to begin with and merely a blogosphere rumor and wondering why more wasn't made out of it. This despite numerous photographs showing Palin obviously pregnant with having NO reason AT ALL for covering this up (after all, she didn't become McCain's running mate until months after Trig's birth). And this despite the fact Down syndrome is extremely rare in Bristol's age bracket percentage wise and the incidence more common with women in her mother's.

Truth didn't matter when it came to this. And still doesn't, apparently.

Does this "professor" have tenure, by the way? If so, it should be yanked.

He's a professor of communications, so evidently his credentials aren't a hoax.

Obituary: Walter Breuning, 114, the world's oldest man, has died:

People began to arrive in Great Falls searching for work. He recalled transplants from North Dakota telling tales of desperate families pulling weeds from the ground and cooking them up for food.

Breuning's seniority paid off again — he held onto his job. But he and his wife never built their house. They sold the lot for $25, making a tidy $10 profit. It turned out to be the only time Breuning ever owned property — he was renter for the rest of his life.

Despite the hard times of the decade, he said what he considered the nation's greatest achievement came in 1935, when President Franklin Roosevelt signed Social Security into law as part of his New Deal.

"I think when Roosevelt created Social Security, he probably did the best thing for people," Breuning said. "You hear so much about throwing Social Security out. Don't look for it. Hang on to your hat. It'll never go away."

He should have run for president.

"It was always my wife's dream for us to have a child ... and even though we won't be using any of her eggs, she would be thrilled to know I'm going through with this," Von Anhalt told TMZ. "I am so excited!! I hope Zsa Zsa is going to hang around for awhile. I want her to see and hold the baby's hand. She will be a mother again at 95!! It was her wish to have a boy

Another obit of note: Arthur Marx, 89, son of Groucho and author of two books about the comedian as well as many others:

Taken together, Arthur Marx’s two books about his father offered a bittersweet picture of life in the Marx home. He described himself as desperate both to escape from his father’s shadow and to please him, an impossible task. The comic genius who kept millions in stitches was, in his private life, miserly and emotionally distant.

“No matter how much he loves you, he’ll rarely stick up for you,” Mr. Marx wrote in “Son of Groucho.” “He’ll make some sort of wisecrack instead to keep from getting involved. It’s a form of cowardice that can be more frustrating than his monetary habits.”

When “Life With Groucho,” which was much sunnier than the sequel, was being serialized in The Saturday Evening Post, Groucho denounced it as “scurrilous” and threatened legal action unless substantial changes were made.

Arthur sent him a phony set of galley proofs with the requested changes but had the book published as written. Groucho never brought the matter up again.

News, Etc.

Sarah Palin was in Reno yesterday trying to draw publicity for herself and for the Safari Club, which invited her to its convention:

During a 40-minute speech, she talked of her love for the outdoors and the “delicate balance” between hunting and fishing and the outdoors.

“... I personally understand the importance of protecting the environment,” she said.
Hunting and fishing, Palin said, are part of America’s “heritage” and the country’s “exceptionalism.”

“Don’t retreat, stand tall,” Palin told the crowd as she emphasized the importance of “responsible conservation.”

In other words, she told them what they wanted to hear.

Political Blood Letting

Reality show star and ex-politician Sarah Palin expresses her complete disinterest in any future political career by digging herself into a deeper hole trying to "explain" her idiotic "blood libel" remark of last week.

She or her speechwriter cribbed the term from a dumbass blogger posing as a law professor--obviously NOT a historian or somebody from the Jewish community--and still doesn't see how offensive it is.

Misusing a specific term to try and score political points basically shot to shit what future she has outside of show business.

More

One could argue, however, that Glenn Reynolds, the culprit who started the whole ball rolling, should also be taken to task for using vile rhetoric as this, but he's a guy, so it's okay.

News, Etc.

Don't blame me, says Sharron.

It might be irrelevant to debate whether or not her stupid rhetoric created the situation in which people might resort to committing crimes as what happened last Saturday in Tucson, but when one thinks about the whole thing, the right probably IS responsible for a Jared Loughner in that they went out of their way to cut funding for the mentally ill.
_____

Sarah Palin should probably consult a dictionary or an encyclopedia before spouting off stupid statements. Or else hire a speechwriter who knows something about history:

Vigorous and spirited public debates during elections are among our most cherished traditions. And after the election, we shake hands and get back to work, and often both sides find common ground back in D.C. and elsewhere. If you don’t like a person’s vision for the country, you’re free to debate that vision. If you don’t like their ideas, you’re free to propose better ideas. But, especially within hours of a tragedy unfolding, journalists and pundits should not manufacture a blood libel that serves only to incite the very hatred and violence they purport to condemn. That is reprehensible.

It's not hard to find out what "blood libel" really is. A Google search would also help. Needless to say, more than a few in the Jewish community are not happy with her "liberal" use of a very specific term.

Video of her making a (bigger) fool of herself:

Could a widely read rightwing blogger actually be the "source" of the misuse of the "blood libel" phrase?

Conservative blogger Glenn Reynolds first used the term this week in the context of the Giffords shooting.

"So as the usual talking heads begin their 'have you no decency?' routine aimed at talk radio and Republican politicians, perhaps we should turn the question around. Where is the decency in blood libel?" he wrote in a Wall Street Journal op-ed titled "The Arizona tragedy and the politics of blood libel."

Although Her Fifteen Minutes of Fame Were Over Long Ago,

Sarah Palin insists on remaining in the spotlight, making an appearance in Searchlight, Nevada, speaking to a throng of "Tea Party" supporters who have been riled up over nothing. Okay, they have been riled up over HCR, which hardly does anything for people the way single payer would, but the fact it is a DEMOCRATIC victory sticks in the GOP's craw.

What's bad is the "tea party" people are being used by the GOP establishment in order to vote against their own best interests.

Anyway, Palin still is getting a ton of sexist remarks aimed at her the more she insists on being in the public eye. I have never been comfortable with the attacks on her and her family, so I have done little in the way of criticism against her.

The thing is this stunt may actually HELP Senator Reid. He's pulled off narrow victories before in Nevada.

Meanwhile, her whatever on the 2008 presidential ticket, John McCain, is turning to her to help get him re-elected in Arizona.

News and Misc

I am not sure why Sarah Palin is going around the country pretending to be a candidate for president in 2012. She doesn't have much chance in getting the GOP nomination.

Of course, it's also quite lucrative to go the speech circuit.

You better believe it CCR is the greatest rock band of all time. The best music came out of the 1960s (with the 1950s right behind it), and there were many great, influential bands, but this one was the absolute best.

The Beatles were the most influential, the Rolling Stones almost as influential and their live act is beyond reproach, although they haven't made a top-flight album in nearly 40 years. There was the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Led Zeppelin, the Beach Boys, and other highly influential groups, but CCR's work holds beautifully and the best of all after all these years.

This list of the "best" rock bands from a few years ago is so off the wall, it can't be taken seriously. At least six or seven of these "picks" don't even belong on the list.

I don't have television to speak of, but just to note the New Orleans Saints beat the Indianapolis Colts 31-17 in today's Super Bowl. The NYT:

The Saints are Super Bowl champions and will bring the title back to New Orleans, which is surely ready for a raucous celebration. Tracy Porter’s 74-yard interception return for a touchdown sealed the victory for the Saints, but Drew Brees was the star throughout. He finished 32 of 39 passing for 288 yards, 2 touchdowns and no interceptions. The 32 completions ties a Super Bowl record held by Tom Brady.

NOLA:

The New Orleans Saints have won Super Bowl XLIV.

They beat the Indianapolis Colts 31-17 here at Sun Life Stadium in South Florida.

Saints quarterback Drew Brees was 32-o-39 for 288 yards and two touchdowns.

But it was the big 75-yard interception return for a touchdown by cornerback Tracy Porter that sealed the deal.

"I studied and knew their tendencies," Porter said. "I just jumped around and the ball went right into my hands."

Porter's teammate Darren Sharper, who was on the Green Bay Packers as a rookie when they lost to Denver, said this was a game that nobody had faith in the team except for the team.

"Man this is unbelievable," Sharper said. "I don't know of anyone who gave us a chance, but when you get here, anyone can win."

Washed-Up Politicians Department

Hundreds of foolish people braved the elements just so they can meet with and get an autographed book from Sarah Palin, who upped and quit being Alaska governor so she could peddle her book and maybe even run for president someday.

No, yours truly decided to stay home; besides, there is no car to drive right now.

Snips:

Michelle Grant surprised her husband, Daniel, with a trip to Reno from Folsom, Calif., late Tuesday night to get the book signed for his birthday.
“I told him to get the day off, but he didn’t know where we were going until last night,” said Michelle Grant, who likes Palin because “she is who she is.”

Daniel Grant said the former Alaska governor is “a true conservative.”
“I hope she’ll do like Reagan and lead the Republican Party back to its roots,” he said.

A Bunch of Idiots in Reno

are willing to stand in line overnight in order to get wristbands tomorrow in order to see former Alaska governor Sarah Palin in person and get her to autograph her ghostwritten book, Going Rogue.

Hell, the weather was in single digits most of the day today; the low is supposed to be 13 tonight and then warm up only to about 30 degrees tomorrow.

It is insane to get her autograph under those conditions.

Update: It is already 6 above zero, and the update says it will be zero degrees. These fans are crazy.

Why Is It the Media Persists

in treating Sarah Palin like shit? Probably no politician, not even the previous so-called president or former president Clinton, have been treated so horribly by the media.

It is true some of it is her fault, but there is prejudice against her for many other reasons, and I don't think it has a lot to do with "qualifications." After all, President Obama didn't have much in the way of experience either when he ran for president.

One is the most obvious, and that she is female, and female politicians have their own unique problems in getting support and money for their campaigns. Hillary Clinton knows this very well. Another problem, and it isn't trivial, is the fact Sarah Palin is attractive. She has to prove herself to not be a bimbo, and unfortunately, there are things she has said which give many people pause about her intellect. Which leads to another factor, and it may be the most critical of all, and that's the fact Sarah Palin is not an Ivy League graduate; indeed, she bounced around in a few state colleges before getting her degree. There is a mentality in the eastern media centers and which is common among many people in that region but not in other parts of the country which says it is very important what college you attended and graduated. The only schools that really count among the eastern establishment are the Ivy League universities. And even among the Ivies, there is a hierarchy of prestige. Universities such as Cornell, Columbia, Dartmouth, and the University of Pennsylvania aren't highly thought of by the elite media; they are little "better" than the despised state universities which the vast majority of college students attend. Princeton is a little more prestigious. The truly important colleges in the eyes of the media are Harvard and Yale, the former being the most important of all. Never mind the fact once a student can get into one of these colleges, the colleges aren't any more rigorous than the garden variety state university. People don't apply and attend those colleges for the "rigor"; they are buying connections which these colleges have in abundance. Anyway, Sarah Palin didn't bother with attending an Ivy League school, and this on top of being from the West disqualifies her from being taken seriously.

I also believe the fact she had a Down syndrome child is a major factor in the hostility towards her although less by the traditional media than by the blogs. Palin didn't do the politically correct thing and have an abortion while at the same time having a high-profile political career. She has called herself a feminist and has lived that idea for years, but many so-called liberals hate her guts and laugh at her insistence she is a feminist. Where is "choice" in all of this, by the way? "Choice" is as much the right to have a child as it is the right to have an abortion.

A snip from Taibbi's article:

The tone for all this behavior is always set somewhere way up the corporate totem pole, and it always reflects some dreary combination of simple business considerations (i.e. what’s the best story and sells the most ads) and internalized political calculus (i.e. who is a “legitimate” candidate and who is an “insurgent” or a “second-tier” hopeful). It’s not that the reporters are making this judgment themselves, it’s that they have to listen to what the apparatus Up There is saying all day long — not just their bosses but the think-tank talking heads they interview for comments, the party insiders who buy them beers at night, the pollsters and so on.

And when all these people start getting in their ears about this or that guy doesn’t have “winnability,” or doesn’t have enough money to run, or has negatives that are insurmountable, all that thinking inevitably bleeds into the coverage. It’s not that the reporters are “biased.” They just don’t have the stones, for the most part, to ignore all the verbal and non-verbal cues they get from authority figures about who is “legitimate” and who isn’t.

Once the signal comes down that this or that politician doesn’t have the backing of anyone who matters, that’s when the knives really come out. When a politician has powerful allies and powerful friends, you won’t see reporters brazenly kicking him in the crotch the way they did to Dean and they’re doing now to Sarah Palin. The only time they do this is when they know there won’t be consequences, meaning when the politician’s only supporters are non-entities (read: voters), as in the case of Ron Paul or Kucinich. Like America in general, the press corps never attacks any enemy that can fight back...

(H/T to commenter Mary Louise for this good piece.)

Political Nonsense

Yes, it is true: Sarah Palin will be in Reno next month to promote her new book, Going Rogue.

She's picking areas of the country which are not too hostile towards her.

Evidently Sarah Palin

must be good for ratings or magazine sales; as for the latter, Newsweek has her picture plastered on its cover. It's a bit sexist and cheesecake, perhaps.

But here's the article:

Moderate Republicans—yes, they are not yet extinct, though most are in hiding—scoff at Sarah Palin and wish she would go away. But she's not going away. This week she's going on-air with Barbara Walters and Oprah Winfrey to flog her new book, Going Rogue: An American Life, and to promote her brand of in-your-face, power-to-the-people conservatism. President Obama is no doubt happy to have her out there on full display. He cannot help but relish the prospect, no longer farfetched, that the Republicans will nominate Palin to oppose his reelection in 2012. A student of history, Obama could be thinking of his predecessor in presidential coolness, John F. Kennedy. In 1963 Kennedy's advisers counseled against giving Sen. Barry Goldwater national stature by posing with the GOP's conservative insurgent at a White House photo op. "What are you giving that SOB all that publicity for?" demanded White House aide Kenny O'Donnell. "Leave him alone," JFK replied. "He's mine."

Obama knows the long odds against a right-wing populist winning the presidency, no matter how good she looks in a skirt (or running clothes), brandishing a gun. He shouldn't be too cocky, however, because the death of the center is ultimately a problem for him and the whole country. If the Palinistas seize the GOP, they probably cannot take the White House. But their brand of no-prisoners partisanship sure can tie up Congress.

In modern memory, Capitol Hill has never been so polarized. With conservatives refusing to reach across the aisle, it will be hard to get even the most modest health-insurance reform through the U.S. Senate, where a 41-vote minority can block legislation. Without bipartisanship, forget about reducing the deficit or doing anything meaningful on the environment, immigration, or tax reform.

The fact of the matter is Obama had better be worried about his OWN chances for re-election, because right now he's not doing too great on the economy and especially on joblessness. His education ideas are a disaster. Those are just a couple of things he deserves to be on the ropes over.

Besides, Palin isn't going to be the GOP nominee in 2012; I fully expect somebody like Mitt Romney to get it.

Now this is odd: Although Sarah Palin is anti-abortion to the point of having had a Down syndrome child, one anti-abortion group is going to protest an appearance she makes Thursday.

I suspect the group is mad not because of her stance on abortion but the fact that she has been a non-traditional mother. And it maybe it's over her recent family woes i.e., Levi Johnston.

So isn't the Pledge of Allegiance, that foundation of Republican Party principles (not), un-American?

Ironically, the Pledge of Allegiance, which today is most fiercely defended by white conservative Southerners whose Confederate ancestors tried to destroy the United States in the 1860s, was written by a Yankee socialist from New York in the 1890s. Francis Bellamy was a progressive Baptist minister and a Christian socialist who composed the pledge for the 400-year Columbus anniversary in 1892 and published it in a youth magazine. His cousin Edward Bellamy, a socialist from Massachusetts (Glenn Beck, are you taking notes?), was the author of the 1888 bestselling utopian novel "Looking Backward: 2007-1887," which described a collectivist America in 2007 in which everyone is drafted in an "industrial army" and dines in public kitchens. (Instead of an industrial army, the United States in 2007 had a reserve army of the unemployed and working poor, and instead of public kitchens we had Starbucks.)

The Bellamys, like many at the time, were inspired by the integral nationalist and statist ideals that were percolating in Europe. From the 1890s until the 1940s, American schoolchildren often accompanied recitation of the pledge with "the Bellamy salute," a stiff-armed salute of the ancient Roman kind that was indistinguishable from the later fascist and Nazi salutes. Heil Amerika! It was Franklin Roosevelt who suggested replacing the salute with a hand over the heart.

This economist's prediction things will get worse before they get better is no surprise to anybody who is jobless:

Think the worst is over? Wrong. Conditions in the U.S. labor markets are awful and worsening. While the official unemployment rate is already 10.2% and another 200,000 jobs were lost in October, when you include discouraged workers and partially employed workers the figure is a whopping 17.5%.

While losing 200,000 jobs per month is better than the 700,000 jobs lost in January, current job losses still average more than the per month rate of 150,000 during the last recession.

Also, remember: The last recession ended in November 2001, but job losses continued for more than a year and half until June of 2003; ditto for the 1990-91 recession.

So we can expect that job losses will continue until the end of 2010 at the earliest. In other words, if you are unemployed and looking for work and just waiting for the economy to turn the corner, you had better hunker down. All the economic numbers suggest this will take a while. The jobs just are not coming back.

In other words the jobs aren't being created to absorb the multitudes of people who are out of work.

Even if I Had Television

I still would have missed the must-see performance by Sarah Palin on Oprah's show.

Palin, as everybody knows, is plugging her book all over the country. We have been treated to the GOP version of the John Edwards soap opera. However, there are more important issues to worry about facing this country.

I don't think she'll be the GOP nominee for president or vice president in 2012.

Miscellaneous Commentary

If a daughter of a man who has trafficked in the exploitation of women, albeit "legitimately," can call herself a feminist, why can't Sarah Palin?

The blog post makes a lot of good points about what litmus test, if any, qualifies somebody to be a "feminist."

I never had any problem with Palin identifying with feminism. After all, despite her abortion stance and a couple of other things, her life and career have closely paralleled the non-traditional family lifestyle. She has basically lived the feminist ideal of taking on a non-traditional career and doing it without having to rely on a man to achieve what she wants.

As for Christie Hefner, she wouldn't be where she is without her daddy and his money. By traditional feminist standards, she didn't get to where she is on merit. She is a classic nepotism hire, first and foremost. The only reason anybody even cares about her at all is because of who her daddy is. It isn't reasonable to expect her to have killed the golden goose of Playboy Enterprises by having ditched the t&a and turned it into some kind of feminist think tank. Of course she stepped down from the company early this year to devote herself to other causes.

Oops

It appears Governor Sarah Palin has some ethics problems:

An independent investigator has found evidence that Gov. Sarah Palin may have violated ethics laws by accepting private donations to pay her legal debts, in the latest legal distraction for the former vice presidential candidate as she prepares to leave office this week.

She's probably going to need to go on the lecture/book peddling route.

Gene Lyons

The latest craze in our deteriorating culture is the self-pity act, as notably displayed by outgoing Alaska governor Sarah Palin.

It's not just Republicans or right-wingers who are engaging in such theatrics. I love this paragraph from Lyons' column:

The cultural left is sometimes as prone to dimwit populism as the right. Witness Al Sharpton's moving an audience to tears by assuring Michael Jackson's children that he wasn't "strange," but his critics were. Sleep-overs with other people's children? Compulsive plastic surgery? Gobbling pills? Mainlining IV drugs? Sorry, reverend, strange doesn't begin to describe the poor soul. But then, nobody ever proposed running Jackson for national office.
