Obituaries

The last surviving filly Kentucky Derby winner and the oldest living one, Genuine Risk, 31, has died. She died just a few months after the 1988 Derby winner, Winning Colors, died. There have been only three fillies who have won the Kentucky Derby. The other was Regret in 1915.

She won the 1980 Kentucky Derby, and came in second in the Preakness and the Belmont. The Preakness was somewhat controversial because the winner, Codex, had driven her wide on the turn, thanks to his jockey Angel Cordero. Her jockey, Jacinto Vasquez, cried foul, but the stewards allowed the finish to stand.

Here are her Triple Crown races for everybody to enjoy:

Kentucky Derby:

Preakness:

Belmont Stakes:

She retired to be a broodmare, but she had only two foals, neither of whom ever raced.

Here is a picture of her with one of her two foals, Genuine Reward:

I believe 1987 Kentucky Derby winner Alysheba, 24, is the oldest living Kentucky Derby winner.
