Frank Rich

Rich keeps harping on McCain's choice of Sarah Palin to be his running mate by whining about the lack of vetting she received. Rich even has the nerve to talk about the lack of vetting of McCain, all the while ignoring the one who has received absolutely no vetting of any consequence whatsoever, his hero Barack Obama.

And because Obama was deliberately not vetted by the national media, let alone the Democratic Party, the GOP will finish the job.

According to Zogby, the GOP ticket is slightly ahead of the Democratic Party ticket. Obama's favorability ratings are poor; in fact his unfavorables are higher than his favorables.

The whole favorable/unfavorable argument is meaningless.

Back in January all the bloggers and liberal elite in the media were arguing that Obama should be the Dem nominee because he had low unfavorables, especially when compared to Hillary.

I argued back then that the figures were meaningless. Low unfavorables simply meant he had not been subjected to attacks. Hillary has been under non stop attacks from the media as well as the GOP for 16 years. Obama has been treated with kid gloves, put on a pedestal declared a Messiah. Of course he is going to have low favorables.

Both Gore and Kerry started with low unfavorables. By election day they had unfavorables in the high forties. Same with Bush. Same with every politician. Familiarity breeds contempt.

McCain has had low unfavorables because he has had the media building him up for over a decade. It is the residual goodwill.

Those are excellent points, Mary Louise. I suspect the reason Obama's are suddenly in the lower range is due to many Democrats being pissed off at him.

It certainly isn't due to any media scrutiny; there has hardly been any.

Obama is having media scrutiny from the right.

Keep in mind during the primaries he had the entire media, right, left, center, cheering him on. From Arianna to Noonan, Frank Rich to George Will were all in his corner.

Of course the love he got from the right wing media was not love for him but hatred for Hillary. It ended once he got the nomination, which was pretty predictable.
