For Those Who Are Interested, [Updated]

live streaming of O.J. Simpson's sentencing for armed robbery and kidnapping is here.

A tough sentence is expected.

MSNBC has it, too:

Judge has denied release for O.J. pending appeal.

Judge Glass is really letting the defendants have it.

Sentencing for O.J. on several counts is prison for 15 years with parole eligibility after 5 years. According to Dan Abrams, O.J. will likely serve at least 6 years in prison. Others say 9 years. There were many counts in this case. The judge was considered to be quite generous to O.J., who could have served for the rest of his life.

More details:

After hearing a statement of remorse from Simpson, whose voice quivered as he spoke, District Judge Jackie Glass imposed a sentence that will keep the Hall of Fame running back behind bars between nine and 33 years.

“I’m not here to try and cause any retribution or any payback for anything else,” the judge told the packed courtroom before announcing her decision. “I want that to be perfectly clear to everyone.”

Simpson, 61, and co-defendant Clarence “C.J.” Stewart, 54, were convicted in October of all counts in the robbery case. Immediately after the verdicts were read, Simpson and Stewart were handcuffed and taken into custody to await today’s hearing.

Glass sentenced Stewart this morning to between 7 1/2 and 27 years.

There is a possibility Simpson could wind up at Ely State Prison, surely one of the most remote prisons in the country.

It's a few miles north of Ely off of Highway 50, in the stretch known all over the country as the "loneliest highway in the U.S." Ely is about 70 miles from Great Basin National Park, which in turn is just a few miles west of the Utah border. Only about three tiny towns are between Delta, Utah, and Fallon, Nevada, a stretch of over 400 miles. One of the towns is Ely, which is the biggest of them, with over 4,000 people. The others are Austin, with a population of 350, and Eureka, with 650 people. We drove past the prison on our way back from the Southwest during June of 2007.

It's known as a very tough prison. It may not be as tough as ADX Florence, which houses some of the most dangerous people on the planet, or Pelican Bay State Prison near Crescent City, California, and it may not have the A-list criminals Corcoran State Prison houses, including Charles Manson, Juan Corona, and Sirhan Sirhan, but it'll do.

I can see O.J. being sent there because of the security reasons, and the fact few in the media would even bother to go clear out in the middle of nowhere to track him down. I know a few cynics might say O.J. would be a boon for business in Ely, despite the fact Ely is close to Great Basin National Park and the Clock of the Long Now, a 10,000-year clock, is slated to be built near the town.

This is the page for the prison.

I read in Wikipedia that High Desert State Prison in Indian Springs just outside of Vegas was doing some conversion to being a medium-to-maximum security prison, primarily because the Ely prison is so remote. O.J. could wind up there.
