It was created in the 1980s as a response to the Reagan A Nation at Risk report, which was later to be shown as a fraud. Some nitwits decided they and only they could determine who is a "superb" teacher and who isn't, but of course it is a subjective concept that can never be quantified.
Teachers waste a year of their lives and thousands of dollars (instead of actually working on master's or doctorates which never expire) on a process to join an "elite club," but it appears the Board Certification misses the whole essence of what teaching is supposed to be about.
Not to mention plenty of shitty teachers cheat during the process.
In short, it is a scam, as the comments following this piece note.
Spend the money on an advanced degree instead.
