Scientist Stephen Hawking, who will turn 70 in three days, is a tough old bird.

He has had ALS for some forty years, which is probably a world record for that disease. People typically afflicted with it live only about three years after diagnosis. Hawking hasn't let it stop him and has led a very productive life, including two marriages and divorces.

New Hampshire Republicans were going to end compulsory education in the state, but they changed their minds and tried to put in a less onerous bill which would have given parents more leeway in pulling their kids out of classes and forcing teachers to have alternate lessons.

It's already done anyway in public schools when parents have to give consent for certain subjects like sex ed, movies, field trips, controversial novels, and the so forth.

The issue is moot because the governor is going to veto it anyway.
