Former governor of South Dakota Bill Janklow, whose career was ruined when he was involved in a car crash in 2003 when he ran a stop sign, killing a motorcyclist, of cancer. He was 72.

At a final news conference in November, Bill Janklow had announced he had inoperable cancer and said his only regret was running a stop sign and killing a motorcyclist. The accident happened less than a year after Janklow was elected to the U.S. House.

"If I had it to do over, I'd do everything I did, but I'd stop at a stop sign," Janklow said.

A fresh incision curving along his hairline from temple to ear, Janklow broke down and cried as he announced he was dying.

Veteran broadcast newsman Richard Threlkeld, 74, was killed today in a horrible traffic accident. He spent most of his career with CBS News.

I didn't know this, but he was married to journalist Betsy Aaron.

The 74-year-old Threlkeld died Friday morning in Amagansett, N.Y., when his car collided with a propane tanker. He was pronounced dead at Southampton Hospital, according to the East Hampton, N.Y., Police Department. He lived in nearby East Hampton.

The driver of the tanker, Earl Fryberger Jr., of Coatesville, Penn., was not injured, said police, who are investigating the accident.

Threlkeld spent more than 25 years at CBS News before retiring in 1998. He was a reporter, anchor and bureau chief who covered the Persian Gulf War and the Vietnam War, the Patty Hearst kidnapping and trial, the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy, and the execution of Gary Gilmore.

Threlkeld was driving a Mini Cooper, and the collusion did not cause an explosion.
