Obituaries--Ernest Borgnine

Oscar-winning actor Ernest Borgnine, best known for his role as the lonely single butcher in the 1955 film Marty, has died of renal failure at the very young age of 95.

Borgnine remained active almost to the end of his life. He was known for going around the country meeting people, something he enjoyed doing.

He played both heroic or sympathetic roles as well as villainous ones. He proved you didn't need to have great looks if you had the talent to be a leading man, as evidenced in Marty.

Borgnine also starred in a television series, McHale's Navy, in the 1960s. The series is out on DVD, by the way, for those interested.

He was married five times, including a brief, disastrous marriage to Ethel Merman. His last marriage was to Tova Traesnaes, a regular on the QVC channel, peddling her cactine or whatever they are cosmetics. They married in 1973, and the marriage somehow lasted all those years.
