Good for Laughs or Tears

I could laugh or cry at this article about the Eli Broad Superintendent Academy, an outfit that is dedicated to destroying public education in the United States. It is a TFA for would-be administrators, regardless of whether or not they have any kind of education background whatsoever:

The district itself certainly hasn’t shied away from hiring Broad graduates — former superintendent Heath Morrison and several of the finalists for the then-open position are products of the academy.

But the academy’s massive expansion hasn’t been met with a warm response by many parents and teachers, according to Oakland-based education activist Sharon Higgins.

According to Higgins, who runs an anti-Broad blog, the academy is focused on turning education into more of a private business, which greatly lessens the voice of parents and teachers.

“It’s being called education reform, but it’s really privatization,” Higgins said.

At least Higgins gets good mention here.

The reason the paper wrote an article about the Broad Academy was because today is the first day of work for incompetent extraordinaire Pedro Martinez as WCSD sup, fresh off his stint at Clark County after having been fired or pushed out of Washoe previously by Heath Morrison for failing to secure federal money for the district, according to rumor.

Too bad the paper's reporter was spending so much time trying to do a puff piece that he or she ignored interviewing teachers and parents in Clark County about his performance there in a job for which he was unqualified:

Critics question whether Martinez -- who has never been a teacher or principal and has only nine years of education experience — has the right background for success.

But Martinez, who has an MBA in accounting from DePaul University, has been lauded by coworkers for his fiscal expertise and implementation of programs that have been credited with increasing graduation rates and test scores.

He doesn't have "nine years" of "education" experience; he has merely worked in school districts over the past nine years.

"Increasing graduation and test scores" translated means fudging figures.

By the way, Martinez was such a trailblazer at Clark County that Superintendent Dwight Jones hired a 24-year career educator to replace him.

No Eli Broadie for Jones this time.
