Now, Reno native Dr. Susan Desmond-Hellmann, 56, has been named the new CEO for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, an internationally known charity that works to improve education and health care in impoverished countries.
Desmond-Hellmann, chancellor of the University of California, San Francisco, will be the first non-Microsoft CEO to run the Gates Foundation.
Established by Microsoft founder and Chairman Bill Gates and his wife, the foundation has an endowment of more than $40 billion, and has awarded more than $28 billion in grants, according to its website.
“I’m really excited about it. I think it’s a fantastic foundation, and I can’t wait to be a part of it,” Desmond-Hellmann said.
