The tests, originally based on a narrow sample, were never designed to be a predictor of college "success," let alone of "intelligence" or of future "success." All they ever indicated to admissions officers was preparation for college. Biddle and Berliner in the 1990s book Manufactured Crisis did a brilliant takedown of the propaganda over the admissions tests.
Admissions officers also used them as a screening tool to weed down the huge number of applications, especially in schools that were in the "top tier" as ranked by the U.S. News and World Report in its silly ratings.
Besides, a kid of 17 or 18 shouldn't be "marked for life" based on those idiotic tests.
Maturity has every bit to do with whether one "succeeds" in college. More to the point, many immature students or students under financial stress drop out of college only to return later on in life, like yours truly did.
No, I never took either one of the tests. I still managed to succeed in college, albeit it was a land grant school and not some Ivy League shit, but I did it. I also made it through graduate school.
I also did well in my life until a couple of assholes derailed it.
