The GOP Has Been Playing the Race Card Since At Least 1968

That is why all of the opposition by Republicans to Donald Trump sounds so hollow and phony.

Nixon and his associates used code words like "law and order" and employed tactics like the "southern strategy" as a way to get disaffected white voters to vote Republican and abandon the Democratic Party after desegregation and the Voting Rights Act became the law of the land in the 1960s. It worked, and now we are at the stage where the Republican Party is on the verge of being passe since the demographics of the country have radically changed. The GOP isn't going anywhere near being extinct because it still controls both houses of Congress and most of the legislatures, but as a national party it is about sunk because it played the race card for too long.

Donald Trump, as insincere as I believe he is because he is being used as a willing tool by Democrats to torpedo a Bush presidency, is spewing hate rhetoric which should not be surprising since the GOP and their mouthpieces on talk radio and Fox "News" have been doing the same thing for years on end, and now the GOP is crying foul. It would be funny to watch if it weren't for the fact too many of Trump's followers would engage in violence themselves judging from the reaction of some of the crowds he is getting.

Instead of African Americans, though they are still being trashed under the "law and order" and anti-gun control nonsense, and Latinos, though they have been skewered thanks to the phony illegal immigration nonsense, it is a religious minority, Muslims, who are being scapegoated because of the actions of a group of terrorists abroad and an isolated shooting in California.

And the other candidates have the nerve to criticize Trump when racism has long been the party's stock in trade.
