No surprise about Aaron Hernandez, who committed suicide in prison back in April.
Former New England Patriots star Aaron Hernandez, who was convicted of one murder and acquitted of two others, suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy, his lawyers said Thursday at a news conference.
“Everyone, including and especially his family, is deeply troubled by this whole thing,” attorney Jose Baez said.
Baez said Hernandez, once a star tight end for the team, suffered from advanced Stage 3 CTE. Experts at Boston University who had examined Hernandez’s brain said it was the most severe case of CTE they had ever seen in a person his age, he said.
Baez said he wished “we may have been able to be a bit more educated on this topic,” saying it could have meant “our client may have been able to understand what was actually happening to him.”
Baez also said the lawyers were filing a lawsuit for lack of consortium, or companionship, on behalf of Hernandez’s daughter, Avielle, against the New England Patriots and the National Football League.
Attorney George Leontire said his client is seeking $20 million in damages.
The New England Patriots had no comment Thursday.
CTE is a degenerative brain disease that has been linked to repeated blows to the head, such as those suffered by football players.
