My hits have gone way down since I changed my URL. I wanted to change it for years because my real name was on it, and I need a bit more anonymity these days if I want to be able to teach again. I will be getting my K-8 license as soon as I get the money as I passed the ORELA part II in January. I had put it off for several years because I was afraid I would not pass it. I passed it with points to spare, but it wasn't nearly as high a score as with the first part. I just decided to take it and let the chips fall where they would fall and not overstudy for it.
There is a lot of age discrimination in education, and I am now 65 years of age. However, I have to work until I cannot physically or mentally do it anymore. At least in education I can work much longer than in other fields, if I am allowed to do it. I know my sixth grade teacher worked as a teacher into her early eighties at least and part-time. I wish I could do that. Given the family history of cancer having lost a brother and a sister to the disease and another brother who has so far successfully battled it, I am a bit scared. I also want to continue to work in education so I can continue to do some travel. This is important to me.
I did manage to get vested in Oregon PERS last December. However, at this same job and hours it would only be until I am 69 years old before I would get a monthly benefit as I do with the Nevada pension, and it would be quite a bit smaller than the Nevada pension, which is tiny thanks to WCSD illegally sacking me 12 years ago. Before 69, I would simply get a cash payout which would have to be rolled over into a Roth IRA thanks to big tax penalties. It would not be beneficial for me to take a cash payout. One of my nephews worked at least a decade in Arizona at a university there, but instead of waiting to get his monthly pension, he cashed it out in order to pay off his student loans. He has regretted doing that ever since. He is working for the State of Oregon at a community college and has for nearly 20 years, but he is not about to cash out and make the same mistake again.
If I taught again, the monthly benefit would be way, way, way more than this classified position, about 2 1/2 times more if I was paid around the 50k or so a year I would make if I could land a teaching job again. I could almost survive between that, Nevada PERS, and Social Security. Speaking of SS, this is another incentive for me to stay in the labor force. I had to take it at 62, and with Medicare eligibility this year, the Part B took a big chunk out of it. If I made halfway decent pay, those recalculations would add up much more than they are doing right now.
I am afraid, however, because of whether the fact I was illegally fired years ago would impact my chances of getting a different job.
