A Thanksgiving Note

In honor of somebody who meant so much to me who passed away on October 29, I am having prime rib instead of the traditional turkey for Thanksgiving.  Moreover, so many members of my family are not in town,  I might as well do something non-traditional this year.  I might even make this a tradition myself.

Because I have been grieving and will continue to do so for probably months if not years, posting here has been spotty.  I haven't as late done much in the way of original, lengthy commentary.  Much of the time I have posted rants and commentary on one of my YouTube channels, which is easier to do than typing similar commentary here.

I will have had this blog, and blogged regularly, for 19 years on around December 15 or so.  There have been some 45,000 posts, not a lot of visits because I never promoted this blog much, only close to 1 million page views.  I have enjoyed writing here. Writing has always been a passion of mine, and, when I am motivated, I am good at it.

I got out of  writing long posts quite a bit, mostly doing a news roundup when I post, and I was one of the first bloggers to do so, when our friend Donald Trump won the Electoral College vote in 2016.  I decided to distance myself a bit from politics because the Trump era depressed the hell out of me.  Now that we are still in the COVID era, I am still depressed over the state of the world.  I am not happy with how things are going with both political parties.  I am old enough to remember when American politics wasn't gripped with widespread insanity as today.  The GOP is overrun with fascists, and the Democratic Party is overrun with ratfuckers who push a degenerate agenda that only serves the other side.  It is an extremely depressing state of affairs.  Finally, what is happening with the environment and planet makes me want to avoid the news altogether.

Of course I have other interests.  This is what is helping keep me alive.  I have my dogs, and all my dogs have been lifesavers for me over the years.  I also have work I enjoy, perhaps not utilizing my full range of skills, but the kids also keep me going.  There is still a reason for me to live and do what I enjoy even when going through despair over the world at large and unremitting grief in my own life.

I went out this morning and participated in the Southern Oregon Runners annual Turkey Trot event at the Jackson County Expo.  The organization did not hold it last year because of COVID.  There was a big turnout for the three events:  the 8-mile, the 5K, and the 2-mile.  As I do each of the times I participate in it, I opted for the two-mile and held my own.  I was only going to brisk walk it, but I ended up jogging the entire way.  My knees held up fine.  I have been running/jogging for forty years.  It is unreal I have kept it up all this time.  I have been a serious cyclist since around 1976.  I have been a hiking fanatic since 2005, when I turned fifty.  Next January I will be 67.  Many people my age have died or their health has gone into a downturn.  Outside of needed major dental work, I have held up pretty well by comparison.

So despite everything, there is still a lot to be thankful for.

The Story of My Mother's Ring

On Saturday I finally got my mother's ring from the pawn shop.  It had been in there for 9 1/2 years, but I finally got the ring out of there for good.  I made a video yesterday about it on YouTube:

Changed the URL for the Blog and Thoughts of My Future

My hits have gone way down since I changed my URL.  I wanted to change it for years because my real name was on it, and I need a bit more anonymity these days if I want to be able to teach again.  I will be getting my K-8 license as soon as I get the money as I passed the ORELA part II in January.  I had put it off for several years because I was afraid I would not pass it.  I passed it with points to spare, but it wasn't nearly as high a score as with the first part.  I just decided to take it and let the chips fall where they would fall and not overstudy for it.

There is a lot of age discrimination in education, and I am now 65 years of age.  However, I have to work until I cannot physically or mentally do it anymore.  At least in education I can work much longer than in other fields, if I am allowed to do it.  I know my sixth grade teacher worked as a teacher into her early eighties at least and part-time.  I wish I could do that.  Given the family history of cancer having lost a brother and a sister to the disease and another brother who has so far successfully battled it, I am a bit scared.  I also want to continue to work in education so I can continue to do some travel.  This is important to me.

I did manage to get vested in Oregon PERS last December.   However,  at this same job and hours it would only be until I am 69 years old before I would get a monthly benefit as I do with the Nevada pension, and it would be quite a bit smaller than the Nevada pension, which is tiny thanks to WCSD illegally sacking me 12 years ago.  Before 69, I would simply get a cash payout which would have to be rolled over into a Roth IRA thanks to big tax penalties.  It would not be beneficial for me to take a cash payout.  One of my nephews worked at least a decade in Arizona at a university there, but instead of waiting to get his monthly pension, he cashed it out in order to pay off his student loans.  He has regretted doing that ever since.  He is working for the State of Oregon at a community college and has for nearly 20 years, but he is not about to cash out and make the same mistake again.

If I taught again, the monthly benefit would be way, way, way more than this classified position, about 2 1/2 times more if I was paid around the 50k or so a year I would make if I could land a teaching job again.  I could almost survive between that, Nevada PERS, and Social Security.  Speaking of SS, this is another incentive for me to stay in the labor force.  I had to take it at 62, and with Medicare eligibility this year, the Part B took a big chunk out of it.  If I made halfway decent pay, those recalculations would add up much more than they are doing right now.

I am afraid, however, because of whether the fact I was illegally fired years ago would impact my chances of getting a different job.

A Shitty Year

I have been slacking off posting here because of some family issues.  It has been a truly shitty year for me and my relatives.  One family member died in August after years of illness, another family member is the final stages of lung cancer, and yet another family member has just gotten a kidney transplant and is the daughter of the family member who is dying of lung cancer. She is also the widow of the relative who died in August.   It has been horrible.  All these people I have known for years or all my life are sick or are dying off, and it isn't going to be any better as the years go by.

My niece is staying here

I feel better when I see the lung cancer relative, who is a sister of mine and lives with another sister, who is her primary caregiver.  Both sisters are much older than I am.  The terminally ill sister is 79, while the other sister is 83.  Everything is taken day by day.  She has good days and bad.  Yesterday I saw her, and the other sister thinks that she is still alive because of her daughter, my niece, who is up in Portland because she is the one who three weeks ago received a kidney transplant.  However, she had to go back to the hospital last week as she had a bowel obstruction likely due to the medication she is taking for the new kidney.  She has to stay in the hospital until she can go to the bathroom again.  God damn it, it is just one worry after another.  She had a tearful visit with her mother before she left three weeks ago because of the realization she may never see her mother face to face again.  They have been on Facetime, and my niece, speaking from her hospital bed, told my sister, who is in a hospital bed provided to her by Asante hospice, how she is doing.  It is sure a great invention to be able to converse on the phone yet be able to see who you are talking with.

Thanksgiving is going to be rough.  All the family who can make it will be here to visit.  I hope my sister will live at least a few weeks longer.  The hospice people said last week to my caregiver sister that she may have two weeks to live.  However, that is just an estimate.  She is still drinking fluids, didn't cough once yesterday, and was even eating.

I am not going to put any kind of Christmas decorations up this year.  I just don't have a whole lot to celebrate.

My New Bike

Today I made a downpayment on a new bike, the first one I have bought in 31 years.  It is a Specialized Ruby, around two grand, and I figure at my age this will likely be the last road bike I ever buy.  I put it on layaway today, so I have three or four months to pay off the balance, which I should be able to do.

The bike shop had an older Ruby, and I really liked the color on it, but I figure this is my best chance to get a brand-new bike before my income gets cut back this fall.  The increased hours at my job were only temporary.  I am applying for new jobs for the fall, but I don't know if I will get another position next year.  I am afraid, after what I went through in Nevada, of applying for another teaching position, especially a full-time one.

The bike, in this particular color:

A Week In Yosemite--Day One

I won't actually be visiting or revisiting the park until Tuesday, but I went through hell getting to the Episcopal Conference Center Oakhurst (ECCO) for one of the Yosemite visits sponsored by Road Scholar.  This is my first one in the program, but it won't be my last.  I am looking at doing more hiking-oriented ones next year like Yellowstone/Grand Teton.

However, I would be very hard pressed to ever again use Greyhound.  I have gone two days without any real sleep because both buses that I took were late. I won't go into any details right now, but I would be very reluctant to use them again.

I am just glad I made it here.

We did have an orientation tonight.  I am practically the youngest person there, which made me feel good for a change.  Most were married couples, and most were from the eastern part of the United States.  Several of them were from North Carolina, for some reason.

An Anniversary to Forget But Can't

Yesterday, April 21, marked the tenth anniversary of when I was illegally fired from my teaching position at Washoe County School District.  It seems long ago now, but again it seems like yesterday.  It was hell going through an illegal termination by an idiot principal who didn't do her job and wanted to cover her ass, spurned by an equally idiot human resources director who didn't do his job and wanted to cover his ass.  It has been a long, hard slog ever since.

What makes it bad is my age at the time I was terminated, 53, and how nearly impossible it has been to get back on track.  Even now, with a stable position, it is only classified, which means it pays peanuts, and it is part-time although it is PERS eligible.  The only reason I am working in my current job is to get the pension vesting, which will occur in about a year and half, provided I am still alive then.  Like Nevada the pension vesting is five years of service credit.  With the job, early Social Security that I had to take,  and the Nevada PERS benefit, combined they are only half what I made at WCSD a decade ago.  That is a tremendous hit in pay, and I damn every single one of those people responsible for all but destroying my professional career.

There are about nine people who were involved who I will never, ever forgive for what they did.  They have no idea how difficult it has been for me.  I am STILL living on a couch in my brother's house eight years later because I cannot afford to buy a place at this time, and I will absolutely not sink any money into an apartment, especially when so few rent to people with pets.  I will not live hand-to-mouth ever again, not when there are things I want to do in the time I have left and given that I am still pretty healthy overall.

And look how well those assholes have done in the years since:

I was messing around on Facebook a few weeks back, and I noticed the cunt who sabotaged me in WEA,  the then executive director, has apparently retired from WCSD, nine years after former HR head Anon 2 bought her off with a job he created in “labor relations.” I don’t know who her replacement is there, if there is anybody.  Good fucking riddance to that bitch.

What the kicker is is that upon research to find her successor there, the job is no longer in existence although a flowchart from the district shows “labor relations” under the “general counsel” department.  It should not surprise me the “job” no longer exists, for Anon 2 created this job out of whole cloth in order to bribe her  into taking it and therefore not being a witness for my side during my termination hearing.  This should have gotten Anon 2 fired right then and there.

There are about nine people who I will never forgive for ruining my life economically but not knocking down my spirit of determination, at least in the medium long-term, when I was illegally “dismissed” nearly ten years ago.  No forgiveness of these assholes:

Anon 1: WEA executive director, later bought off by crooked HR head, who created a job for her in a quid pro quo-type of arrangement.

Anon 2:  The asshole who was head of HR and spearheaded my “investigation” and never bothered to find out the truth; he just wanted to save money by getting rid of me on totally fabricated charges.  He wanted to get at my pension and my teacher license or my special education endorsement , and he failed to do either.   Prick was demoted by then-superintendent Heath Morrison in 2011 to head housekeeping services; he retired in 2014 or 2015 from the district.  He then went to work for the Nevada State Education Association in Elko as a uniserve officer, or whatever the fuck they call it.  He just recently returned to Reno and took Anon 1's old job at WEA after her replacement  retired.  That is reason enough never, ever to join WEA.

Anon 3:  The lawyer who supposedly “represented” me in the termination hearing but was actually in bed with WCSD and failed to tell me I needed to file a claim with EEOC.

Anon 4:  The worthless principal who threw me under the bus, thus damaging if not destroying my career and making it impossible for me to ever be able to retire.  She was moved as “punishment”  by then-superintendent Paul Dugan for her illegal termination to another school.  Bitch was there for two years, then she got a make-work job in the “green house” being a “TIF grant coordinator.”  She did that for a year, then, under new superintendent Pedro Martinez, she got moved to another school.  She lasted there for two years, and then went back to the central office to be a “principal on special assignment”; i.e., a principal given yet another make-work job when she couldn’t cut it as a principal, this time being involved in “professional development.”  This is where she is currently at.  She will likely fart around there for the next three or four years until she gets her thirty years in for full Nevada PERS, all done on the back of my career.  A worthless sack of shit of a human being.

Anon 5:  Corrupt attorney who was involved in my illegal termination.  Lied his ass off in his brief about me.  A total piece of shit who is still employed by WCSD.

Paul Dugan:  At the time the WCSD superintendent.  Totally worthless, rubberstamping a dismissal he knew was illegal.  He retired in 2009, got widowed and shortly thereafter got remarried to a much-younger girlfriend he had in the central office.  He moved to the Portland, Oregon, area, getting something around 160,000 a year or more pension, plus his current wife gets a fat pension of around 60,000 a year.

Anon 6:  Evil, evil bastard principal who started this whole mess of scapegoating me when I refused to violate NCLB regarding special education students.  Spent the rest of the 2006-2007 year in retaliation.  Completely mentally ill, likely a sociopath.  I demanded to be moved as a result of him writing up a bullshit “letter of admonition” regarding my taking students to the store without giving him two weeks’ notice.  He was full of shit.  He later got demoted to teacher after one of his girlfriends’—he has been married since the mid-1980s and has two grown children—husband complained to the higher ups that Anon 6 was having an affair with his wife, who just happen to be a subordinate of Anon 6.  He caught them together at a local motel.  He reported them, and he was demoted to teacher at an area high school in 2011.  He did that for about three years, with nary a peep heard about him.  But then he thought he was good enough to apply for an assistant principal job up at another school.  He did that job for about two or three years, but just this year he got promoted to principal.  Unbelievable this harasser was allowed to remain with the district, when in fact he should have been fired for what he did.  His track record in this regard goes back many, many years.  He was known to have sex on campus during school hours with other faculty.  The man is pure evil.

Anon 7:  Colleague at my last Nevada school who lied under oath at my hearing.  Took off with her husband to Canada about a month-and-a-half after my hearing.

Anon 8:  Speech pathologist at my last Nevada school who was Anon 4's “useful idiot.”  She was off-her-rocker batshit crazy.  She, too, was willing to lie for Anon 4 at the hearing, but she was kicked out of there after about two or three minutes of testimony.  Still employed with the district, but she is currently at an elementary school in Sparks, where she has been for several years.  For a couple of years she would follow me around on the internet trying to rub it in, just like the immature idiot she is, until I got fed up with her and sent her a nasty email in 2012.  She never pulled her little shit ever again.

No way in hell will any of these people ever be forgiven for what they did to me.

In the meantime, I will likely have to work until I die.  I still have a fear of applying for teaching positions because of the weeding out questions on the applications.  My age also works against me.

NEVER Date or Marry a "Self-Employed" Man

There is a guy in this trailer park, who I will call "Jeff," who seemed to have an attraction to me for a time, but the other day he was parading around his girlfriend, who like him is in her fifties and has been ridden hard.*  Oh, she was fashionably slim, with real tight jeans and dyed blond hair, but she didn’t fool me as to her age.  I had to laugh to myself at the folly and stupidity of this woman.  She might be the “girlfriend” who was “just friends” with him a couple of years ago after having had a relationship and they decided to rekindle it or some goddamned thing.  Anyway, I think the woman is an idiot for taking up with a man who clearly doesn’t have a stable income of any sort, and he is pushing 60 (another liability for yours truly as I do NOT particularly like younger men).  I looked at the SUV or crossover SUV she has.  It is a late-model SUV, and I thought, how the fuck could she afford a nice vehicle like that?  I figured she either has a stable job, or most likely, she has a stable job but also came into a fat divorce settlement.  She probably owns a stick house on top of it.

Anyway, Jeff was parading this woman around the mobile home park last week.  He was holding hands with her while walking his dog, showing her off trying to make me jealous or some stupid shit.  My heart, such as it is, belongs and always will belong to somebody else, and I don’t need to mention his name here.  I wouldn’t have this Jeff character or whatever his name is.  But here this well-dressed woman with a nice vehicle is dating this guy who has a pickup with a canopy that isn’t anywhere near as nice as what she drives.  He lives in a goddamned older mobile home, for crying out loud.  My guess is this guy does remodeling floors and such for a living.  He has this guy who comes and picks him up many mornings, and they go to “work” together.  It’s a bunch of bullshit.  It is like these guys who do yardwork and have a “business.”  It is complete and total bullshit.

Because the Rogue Valley doesn’t have much in the way of blue-collar employment and manufacturing anymore, not since the early 1980s, such dudes who don’t have an education beyond high school figure they can “make money” having their own “business.”  There are a glut of “contractors” in this town, probably far more “contractors” than there is demand for them.

I remember my dad having his dairy and then his sand and gravel business.  He did pretty well for himself, and Ma made sure he stayed on the straight and narrow so they would have a decent retirement, which they did for the rest of their lives.  They paid into Social Security; my mother made goddamned sure of it and nothing was “under the table.”  My dad worked his ass off to support Ma and us kids.  There were weeks at a time I didn’t see him because he and his small crew would go out of town on projects  in that godawful Alturas, California, or Oakridge, Oregon.  He sure as hell didn’t fart around like this Jeff guy does, who seems to work only about half the time.  That is because there is a glut of “independent contractors” in the Rogue Valley.  You’d think a guy pushing 60 would look into working for somebody else and at least get some financial stability in his life before his body is totally wrecked from physical labor.  He already is pretty shot now.

I would NEVER, EVER have a man like this with no stable income.  He and his partner might make a few thousand for each “job,” but expenses eat it up.  I doubt this dude pays into Social Security and certainly doesn’t have anything remotely like a pension or investments of any sort.  If he actually made “good money” remodeling floors and shit, he would not be living in an older mobile home in a trailer park with the least expensive monthly rent in Medford.  He would be living in a stick house on a lot in the better suburbs of Medford.  He dresses like shit, almost like a street person, unless he goes out and sees his “sweetie,” which is almost every single day.  Like clockwork, this dude goes over to his squeeze’s house to sponge off her because she is a moron who cooks “his” dinners for him.   The minute this dude gets dropped off or returns home from “work,” he gets cleaned up, grabs his dog, and he goes over to her house.  He very seldom stays the night with her, and I don’t think she has ever spent the night at his place.  My guess is she still has kids living at home.  In any case,  I don’t understand women who even do this bullshit for men like cooking.  I don’t understand women who would ever date a guy like this.  He must be good in bed or something, for the guy has red flags all over the place.

Does that mean he is a bad guy?  Nope, but the fact he isn’t working for somebody else means that if she marries him, and I think she is stupid enough she will at some point, she will be supporting that business and him and not the other way around.  This guy has NOTHING to offer her at all.  At their ages, financial security becomes paramount.  He will be nothing but a parasite to her.

Women often marry men who are self-employed, like a childhood friend of mine did with her husband, or they will help a spouse get established in a business (and husbands also help wives get established in self-employment while they work for employers), and they KNOW upfront they are going to have to make sure there is an income stream in order for that business to get off the ground.  In my friend's case, her husband had inherited the business from his father, and they have been able to keep that business for over 40 years and are gradually turning it over to one of their sons.  They are able to afford to retire.  There is nothing wrong with that because she knew what she was getting into when she married him over 40 years ago.   What they have is an established business.  There is nothing wrong with that.

There is also nothing wrong with a man who goes into self-employment after he has had a long career in public sector work or in a private business with a strong union or a high-paying job and then decides on self-employment as a second career following retirement.  Such a man has a history of financial stability and has the wherewithal to tide himself over when there are slack periods.  Given this guy’s current lifestyle, I doubt this situation applies to him.

There is also nothing wrong with men who are in professions like medicine and law and have their own offices.  Those are more often than not lucrative.

Those are the exceptions to the rule.  However, since most self-employment goes belly up within a few years if not a few months, dating and marrying men who engage in it are extremely high risk for women.  Yet women like this dude’s sweetie date these guys knowing the risks.

It is all in the mentality women think they are nothing without some dude around to “love” them.

Women, once they are past their so-called “sell-by” date in the idiot “dating market” meaning they are past 35,  get desperate.  This is especially true with divorced women—not so much widowed women, who tend to be older and certainly not never-married women—who think that any man, even one like this who I think is a loser, is better than none at all.  They just absolutely waste their time putting men at the center of their lives.  They will go from man to man to man, marriage to marriage to marriage, because they think that being alone is a mark of failure as women.  Women are totally invested in these relationships.  They are often in dire financial straits themselves after losing that big lifestyle that a two-income household provides.

When I see this dude walking around the trailer park, and he probably won’t be there too much longer once he gets his tentacles into this sugar mama and marries her, I think of my ex-brother-in-law, who was married about 11 times before he snared my sister, who had been single for about twenty years.  She got sick and tired of the grind of having to work menial jobs and wanted to get out of the rat race.  Well, you know the saying, “be careful what you wish for.”  He had a “business” driving a truck, but he drove a junker truck, poured tens of thousands of dollars into this wreck, and then of course plunged my sister into bankruptcy by the time the marriage had ended.  He was also a bigamist and had to wear an ankle bracelet for a brief time.  My sister married this guy knowing he was already married.  God, this was an episode straight out of the Jerry Springer Show.  She eventually divorced him for good the second time, and it has been a tough life for her ever since, but she is free from that parasite.  He went on and married at least one more time.  Two good things happened out of that marriage, however.  My sister got to visit most of the states in the country having traveled with him, and she did get a dog out of the relationship (it was his, but he didn’t care that she ended up taking care of the dog until the dog died in 2010).  I also got a dog out of that relationship by the name of Tony.  He had been my ex-brother-in-law’s daughter’s dog.   He was my love for 11 years, 3 months until I had him put to sleep in August of 2010.  I have a picture of him on the sidebar of this blog, in the "about me" section.

I am also reminded of one of my nephews, who also has a history of “self-employment,” now “freelance writing,” which he is good at, and has been able to eke out an existence, but he has been heavily reliant on—or I should say “attracted to”—women with a lot of money.  His first wife came from a millionaire family, his second wife wasn’t a millionaire, but she had ambition and had her own business.  Other relationships since have been with women who are from wealthy families or have had big settlements from ex-husbands.  He is a good guy, but it seems his main career has been as a kept man.  What he should do is get a job at a local university where he lives,  Oregon State University, and he would probably have a really good career in public relations or similar work and get that all-important state pension.  His brother has been smart and has been in public employment for years..  He has his hobby that he loves, filmmaking, but he has a very stable job at a community college in the Portland area.  He should be set pretty well when he retires in a decade or so.  I wish his brother would stop the gigolo bullshit.**

NEVER get involved with a “self-employed” man (exceptions noted above).  NEVER.

*--Update, August 2019:  This dude and his girlfriend, who was apparently at least a decade older than he was, broke up about three months ago.  There was no way this arrangement was going to last.  She has never been back to visit him.   For about a year after I wrote this blog post, they were really laying it on thick, with her visiting him about three times a week, and he doing the same thing.  Then, as he started working more, they alternated their time "together" during weekends.  Finally, all of a sudden, she was totally out of the picture.  These days he stays mostly at home with his aging dog.

**--Second update, August 2019:  My nephew now supposedly has a really good job working from home, so he can live pretty much anywhere he likes.  His current girlfriend is much younger, and they and my nephew's dog go out hiking and camping quite a bit.  I hope his "gigolo" days are finally over.

Close Call

Monday afternoon I almost met my maker. When I was walking down the street of the mobile home park where I live with my brother, I heard a crackling sound, and then suddenly half of a tree came crashing down on me. Fortunately, I was grazed lightly with some tree branches and leaves. If I had stayed on the sidewalk, I probably would have been knocked out cold.

Here are some pictures:

What's currently left of the tree:

The rest of the tree needs to be cut down:

How the tree looked shortly after my encounter and before groundspeople chopped it up and disposed of it:

Never Bring a Knife to a Gunfight

I haven't seen my brother since 2003, but it is comforting to know he is still alive. However, he is working overtime to get into the Darwin Awards:

STOCKTON — A tense moment unfolded Thursday morning outside a north Stockton business when a police officer pulled his gun on a transient man who was advancing toward him with a knife, authorities said.

The officer told Gary Nunes, 63 [sic--he was 64 at the time], to move along because he was disrupting customers shortly after 9:10 a.m. in the 1500 block of East Hammer Lane, police said. As the officer walked back to his patrol car, he turned to see Nunes coming toward him with a knife, authorities said.

According to police, Nunes said, "You better pull your gun." The officer drew his weapon and ordered Nunes to drop the knife. Nunes complied and was taken into custody without further incident, police said.

Nunes was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct, authorities said.

He must have needed a shower or a place to sleep badly to do something so incredibly stupid. I haven't laughed this hard in months.

If he ever gets shot by a cop, rest assured you will not find me on the talk show circuit talking about police shootings.

Usain Bolt, Eat Your Heart Out

This morning I went to the Jackson County (Oregon) Expo and Fairgrounds for the annual Turkey Trot sponsored by the SORE Runners group. I entered the two-mile jog/walk. I jogged slowly, but I never stopped to walk. The ankle I had injured some four months ago is doing great; I did wear the ankle support just in case. My knee, which gave me a bit of trouble last night, was fine.

I received a medal for having completed it. I am going to keep the plastic on the front of it there:

It Took Fifteen Months

but I was able to finish the first draft of my autobiographical novel, with the working title of Lesson Plans. Pulling much of the story out of my own life, it is the story of a fired teacher who exacted revenge on her principal after he fires her in an attempt to cover up his sexual misconduct.

It was pretty cathartic to write about it after what had happened to me some eight years ago, but I enjoyed writing it. I am not a big fan of Kindle, but the good thing is a person can actually publish works and get it out there even if there is a ton of competition involved, just as there is in the real world of publishing a hard copy book.

I expect the editing and revising will take a few months before I have the guts to put it on Kindle. I will also have to pay somebody to do the "design" on the "cover." That will take some time as well.

I am also looking into the possibility of using a pen name.

New Computer

It was a year in the making, but yours truly finally got a new computer, a Toshiba laptop.

Now I can start studying for that teacher licensure exam and start writing that book that I have been wanting to write.

Looks Like I Will Buy a New Computer This Weekend

I am tired of this repairs bullshit, so I am going to bite the bullet and buy a new laptop.

I guess you can say the old PC has an obituary here, just as I noted the "death" of my old car back in 2008.

I can get a decent laptop for 300 or 400 bucks and not have to worry about the headache anymore.

It's a Bitch Getting Older

Once again I got sick over the weekend after I just recovered from a respiratory infection that put me out of contention for about two weeks, including not being able to work for four days.

This time it was a stomach virus that about knocked the crap out of me. I had the runs, and then I had terrible stomach and abdominal pain that only just subsided late yesterday. I had the same thing last fall, the day after I participated in the Ride the Rogue event. I was wiped out for days.

I worked so hard for so long trying to get a regular job, even if it is part-time, and here I get tucking sick with one thing right after the other. It makes me wonder if I should work with young kids anymore, let alone get that K-8 Oregon license.

I haven't felt too much like blogging here with all of the illnesses and crap.

Too Cold to Do Much of Anything

and that includes blogging. So far my new job is going well. It is great to get back in the classroom, even if I am not a teacher at this time. I was amazed I ever again worked a regular job in the field. I was just about ready to hang it up.

I am still volunteering at the place where I got the "training" at because I love to research and list books to sell. I have sold almost half of the books I have listed since I started listing books about six weeks ago. I have listed about 140 books so far. I have been coming in on Saturdays and working for about three hours. Yesterday I listed 15 books and already sold one.

The dogs are doing fine, even Sam with his CHF. I hope I have him around quite a while, and I could. I am not walking him like I used to anymore because it makes him breathe too hard--makes him wheeze--and I don't want to overtax him. At least he's a chihuahua so I can carry him while walking Duffy so he doesn't feel left out. He can also go out and do his business two or three times on our short walks.

It was too cold to do much of anything outside. I cannot tolerate Oregon winters; they are just too cold and damp, and the cold goes right through me. Living in Nevada for so many years affected me to where I have no tolerance for damp cold.

If I ever get my finances in order, I am getting out of this place for good and moving to where it is warmer in the winter. It may take me a few years before I am out of here, but out of here I must go.

I Can't Believe It

Six and one-half years later, I have finally secured regular work, albeit it is a part-time job with no benefits, but it is at least better than temporary stuff. I will be working in one of the area school districts as a classified employee doing early reading intervention. I will be working with kindergartners at one of the schools.

The shift is 3.75 hours per day, five days a week. I will have to figure out how I will make it during the summer months, but getting this part-time job gets me into the informal pool of the full-time positions when those become available. I will probably try and get my Oregon K-8 license after all.

If and when I get my computer out of the repair shop, I intend on working on a novel about a teacher who is harassed by a principal and retaliates after the principal retaliates. I have a lot of background experience and the experience of others to draw upon. Of course I will have to use a pseudonym.

Although I am not a fan of eBooks, I do realize their existence makes it easier for people to self-publish.

Lots of Things Going On, Too Lazy to Blog

Sorry about not putting something in here today, but I got all sidetracked. That book exchange that I am working at for Experience Works is going to be the death of me, just like Baker & Taylor was all those years ago when I spent literally thousands of dollars on books. This time, though, it's worse because most of the books are free to the public.

I have picked up loads of biographies, current titles, and other (mostly) nonfiction titles. I probably have enough books to last me the rest of my life, but still I get them.

Today I bought two titles from the store and picked up four Walter T. Foster art instruction books. I really want to take proper art courses as well as proper photography courses. The lack of money these past six years and especially the last four has been nothing short of a bitch. I am not sure I am going to substitute teach at all this year because I like having a stable check, even if the training is only part-time, minimum wage. At least I can count on it, and I don't have to worry about being financially devastated during the summer months. I am hoping there is a job out there with my name on it, preferably back in education in some capacity since that is what my area of training is, even in a lousy area like southern Oregon.

As soon as I get my computer up and running, I am going to start writing a couple of books. At least with "eBooks" it is easier to self-publish.

Anyway, I don't have much else to say.

Nothing to Do, Nothing to Blog About

By the time I get done at the Book Exchange and finish with the transportation, the day is pretty much shot to shit.

The transportation issue is a royal bitch. I may spend five hours at the book exchange, but it is a good 90 minutes to 2 hours just to get to and from the place thanks to having to wait for the buses to arrive at either my stop or at the bus station.

I am going to be out of a car for at least the next 10 days to 2 weeks. I really hate this nickel-and-diming shit.

Lots of bloggers try to get people to contribute when they need help, but I don't have enough readers here that I can do that very well.

I'd like to be able to raise the money to get that damned fuel pump over and done with so I don't have to juggle other expenses.

As for the world "out there," I doubt there is much going on to get me very pissed off over.

Feel and Look Like Something the Cats Dragged In

I am winding down my fourth week in the training program for Experience Works. I mentioned the program in an earlier post. I am grateful I am getting at least some income, albeit it is only $285 every two weeks after taxes. Pretty much all of the money is gone when I get paid, and I have to save like the devil to be able to get the parts for the fuel pump for my car. My nephew the mechanic is going to fix it when I FINALLY get that money together next week or the week after. While $200 doesn't sound like a lot, it IS a lot when you are as broke as I am. It might as well be 20 grand.

I get a total of $876 a month after taxes and including the pension I get from Nevada PERS. It's a far cry from 50 grand a year six years ago. There is no end in sight, I am afraid. I have put in for many positions in education, but so far I have landed zip in interviews, let alone jobs. That doesn't mean there won't be any bites as the school year is ending up here, and perhaps given the lack of a car right now, it may be just as well.

One good news is I get the full SNAP benefit because the training is exempt from calculations. Apparently so is my pension as long as I am in Experience Works. That's a big help, let me tell you. I should have enough of a SNAP benefit to last me about the entire month.

Although the training has nothing to do with teaching, I don't mind doing it. It's just that it is so much physical labor, and even though it is just 5 hours a day, four days a week, I am worn out by the end of the day. I think a lot of the problem is due to my thyroid being screwed up, while another explanation is likely having to take the damned bus and waste 90 minutes or so a day in a commute. That is just ridiculous. If I had the car, it would take me no more than 15 minutes total to get to and from the site.

Since this book exchange has oodles of books, I have been taking some of them home. Given almost all of these books are nonfiction, I have no plans of ever returning them. I don't have to, of course, when I am done reading them. I don't care what people say about Kindle--real, physical books are so much better. I have been reading a lot of biographies and general nonfiction.

That takes up a lot of my time, so I don't spend a lot of time here on the blog like I used to. If I start on that goddamned idiotic Vergara ruling, I will get completely agitated because the damned thing is so completely wrongheaded and ignorant. It's like there was some kind of deal cut between the idiot judge and the plaintiffs.

Teachers are really up against it, and I am not overly optimistic for the future of public education in this country, let alone the country as a whole. The gangsters have the upper hand, and they control the Department of Education.

Crooks, every last one of them.

While it seems crazy I am trying to get back in the field, I have no choice in the matter. It is impossible to retrain for something else short of winning the lottery. There is no money, and I am having to continue to take deferments from Sallie Mae over the loan I had back in 1999.

I have other ideas kicking around what I want to do in the time I have left, but I can't do anything unless I have a decent income stream.
