Today a group of 17 people went to an excursion sponsored by the Friends of the Cascade-Siskiyou Monument to observe, catch, and release butterflies and discuss their habitat. The Monument is located near Ashland, Oregon, which is a few miles north of the California-Oregon border.
A highlight of the event was a goldenrod plant located near the edge of Hyatt Lake. This plant had literally dozens of mostly tiny butterflies, bees, wasps, and other insects. I was the first one to notice it, and it wasn't long before the group gathered around it. Most of the butterflies wouldn't keep still because we were around, and it was hard to get pictures. However, at this particular plant, the insects didn't seem to mind or care people were around.
