A Few Reads for Thursday

No, I haven't quit this blog.  I was busy, and I went to eastern Oregon to stay at a motel and visit the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery in Eagle, Idaho.  However, there is a ton of smoke thanks to a major fire that is in both remote eastern Oregon and in Idaho.

As of yesterday, this is the largest active blaze in the United States.

More is here among many places.

It might be a bit cynical on the part of California's Governor Gavin Newsom, but just in time for the fall election, he decided to issue an executive order to remove homeless encampments throughout the state.

I have a relative who is homeless and has been for decades.  If he is alive, I wonder where he is or will be staying.

Not long after she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, Representative Shirley Jackson Lee. Democrat of Texas, died the other day.   She was 74:

The Congresswoman’s cause of death was not disclosed but it would appear that the cancer that invaded her body was particularly fast-moving and virulent. Even still, it was a shock to those who knew and loved her. She had, after all, battled, and overcome, breast cancer a little more than 10 years ago. It deepened her commitment to cancer research, a cause she was likely not as well known for, but perhaps should have been. When Jackson Lee fought for a cause, she did so fearlessly and indefatigably, most recently going to battle against those who sought to repeal the Affordable Care Act.
