Breeders' Cup Classic 2020

Kentucky Derby winner Authentic pulled off the win for this year's Classic.  He will likely get at least three-year-old champion in the Eclipse Awards.  It was a good field at Keeneland:

Authentic went wire to wire.

Improbable, also trained by Baffert, won second, while Global Campaign
 came in third.

The election results really got me sidetracked this year, so much so, I missed the live race of the Classic, something I NEVER do.

All in all, it was a great day at Keeneland.

Breeders' Cup Classic

It was an exciting stretch run, but...

Arrogate did get favored California Chrome at the wire, however. Arrogate will likely get three-year-old champion, while California Chrome most likely will win Horse of the Year.

It was the third BCC win in a row for trainer Bob Baffert.

Breeders' Cup Classic Results: American Pharoah Did It

The only Triple Crown winner eligible to win the Breeders' Cup Classic EASILY beat a bang-up field including Honor Code, Tonalist, Keen Ice (who beat him in the Travers), and Frosted in this year's Breeders' Cup Classic. He controlled the pace just as he did in the Belmont, leading from wire to wire in Keeneland.

He won by about six lengths. Effinex (who somehow got that name past the Jockey Club) came in second, and Honor Code came in third.

More:

American Pharoah set the pace and pulled away with ease in the stretch to take the 1 1/4-mile dirt test. Zayat Stables' homebred son of Pioneerof the Nile set fractions of :23.99, :47.40, and 1:11.21 through six furlongs, while Effinex provided mild pressure on the backstretch. The leader, however, had no challengers leaving the far turn.

Now it is off to Ashford Stud.

Zenyatta may get Horse of the Year honors as she has won the Breeders' Cup Classic, thus making it 14 for 14.

Speaking of horses, Zenyatta, who is undefeated, will be challenging the boys in this Saturday's Breeders' Cup Classic and be the first female ever to win the major race on the card.

I prefer she enter the Distaff rather than face possible defeat. She has won all of her 13 starts.

Classic winners Mine That Bird and Summer Bird are expected to run in the race.

Breeders' Cup

This year's Breeders' Cup Classic may be a bust. Big Brown, this year's winner of the Kentucky Derby and Preakness, has injured his foot and will be retired:

Trainer Rick Dutrow said the 3-year-old colt, who was preparing for the Breeders' Cup Classic on Oct. 25, appeared to kick himself while working on the turf course at Aqueduct with stablemate Kip Deville. Big Brown was able to complete the six-furlong work when Dutrow noticed blood coming out of the foot.

"It looks like he grabbed himself in a bad spot," Dutrow said.

The race, anticipated to be with champion Curlin, was to be Big Brown's last before retiring to stud at Three Chimneys Farm in Midway, Kentucky.

It was a pretty bad injury:

"Big Brown has been retired," said Michael Iavarone, co-owner of IEAH Stables. "He not only tore the bulb off his foot, but half the foot was torn off. We did everything we could to get to the Breeders' Cup. It's devastating. And what makes it even worse is that he worked great."

The handlers had no other choice but to retire him.

After Big Brown's disastrous Belmont Stakes finish, if you can call it a finish, he won the Monmouth Stakes and the Haskell Invitational. He had seven wins in eight starts.

Breeders' Cup

The big question right now is whether champion racehorse Curlin will show up at Santa Anita.

Yes, I have some memorabilia for this year. I just received some items today.

A beautiful animal, George Washington was bred by Roy and Gretchen Jackson, the same people who bred and raced Barbaro.

George Washington raced in Europe.

Snip:

"He did well to stay up," jockey Mick Kinane said. "He was brave. He didn't go down. He stayed up on it. He saved me."

As the World Turns.

Nevada Day organizers risked alienation yesterday.

The statehood celebration is a major event in this state. When I lived in Oregon, few people knew or even cared about when it became a state (February 14, 1859) and certainly didn't celebrate it.

Everybody here knows when Nevada was admitted to the Union (October 31, 1864).

The injury suffered by George Washington in yesterday's Breeders' Cup Classic could not be repaired and he had to be put down:

“He had an open fracture of the condyle,” said on-call veterinarian Dr. C. Wayne McIlwraith. "The fetlock was dislocated with both sesamoids fractured as well. So it was a hopeless injury as far as repair, and he has been euthanized.”

I just hate this stuff, and it seems that more and more horses are prone to breakdowns because of poor breeding habits. Soundness simply isn't as prized as it once was.

George Washington, 4, raced just 14 times and won six races. Compare his record with the likes of Whirlaway, Exterminator, John Henry, or even Affirmed and Spectacular Bid.

No amount of magic was able to keep David Copperfield out of the courtroom on rape charges:

Sources confirmed that the woman told investigators Copperfield later promised he could help with her modeling career and invited her to his isolated $50 million private retreat at Musha Cay, in a tiny string of white-sand islands 85 miles southeast of Nassau, Bahamas.

She told investigators Copperfield assured her that there would be other guests at the 150-acre resort, which is restricted to a maximum of 24 guests and rents for up to $50,000 a night. From Nassau, the retreat is accessible only by charter plane and then private boat.

When the woman, 21, made the trip in late July -- after exchanging e-mails with Copperfield, 51 -- she found herself the only guest on the island with him, she told investigators. She has told Seattle police, and later the FBI, that Copperfield raped and struck her during her two days on the island, said sources familiar with her allegations.

She said that, afterward, Copperfield threatened her, telling her she'd better keep quiet, and then escorted her onto a plane, sources said.
