California Chrome successfully navigated the turf for the first time yesterday when he won the Hollywood Derby. He should at least win the champion three-year-old Eclipse award, if not Horse of the Year.

A Big Mouth Apologizes
Steve Coburn finally realized his uncouth remarks following the defeat of his horse, California Chrome, in Saturday's Belmont Stakes went over like the proverbial turd in a punchbowl.
He has to realize he was alienating the very people who have influence on the Eclipse Awards.
California Chrome may or may not get Horse of the Year (I am thinking Palace Malice may wind up getting it though it is still very early in the racing season), but he certainly is the odds-on favorite for champion three-year-old male. Coburn should not be complaining anymore about the Belmont or the Triple Crown.
Coburn alienated not just racing fans in general or Tonalist's connections, he managed to alienate his horse's trainer Art Sherman and even his own wife.

We find out now that California Chrome probably wasn't 100 percent for the Belmont. Of course we don't know if his hoof problem coming out of the gate was the reason he didn't "fire" or whether it was jockey Victor Espinoza not taking charge of the pace of the race or whether California Chrome just didn't have the stamina for the mile-and-a-half.
What we can say for sure is Tonalist and his connections are NOT to blame for the defeat because he didn't run in the other Triple Crown races. In fact, Tonalist WAS pointed to the Kentucky Derby, but he suffered from a couple of ailments and couldn't compete.

Now that California Chrome got the okay to wear the nasal strips, he has now arrived at Belmont Park to prepare for June's Belmont Stakes and try to be the 12th Triple Crown winner.
That's a tall order, especially when many of the Kentucky Derby entrants decided to skip last Saturday's Preakness in order to compete in the Belmont and upset the favorite.
Some have noted California Chrome is a sixth-generation Secretariat descendant, but when horses are that far removed, it doesn't mean much. Literally thousands of thoroughbreds today have the Great One in their pedigrees. California Chrome is known for his sire and dam's modest breeding, in a way like Carry Back's pedigree.

I Am Glad He Is Running
If there are no drugs involved, then there is no reason California Chrome shouldn't have the nasal strips. Apparently these are used to help horses with breathing issues.
I was under the initial impression these involve drugs, but they do not. They aren't any worse than tongue ties or blinkers or shadow rolls. ALL of those types of equipment help horses race but don't give them an unfair advantage.
If they did, Secretariat would have been regarded as a cheat because he always wore blinkers.
