The pedestrian/cyclist bridge being built over Barnett Road in Medford, Oregon, will be done in July. It will be great to be able to bicycle almost nonstop from Central Point to southern Ashland, a total of 21 miles one way.

Eventually the bike path will be extended north, but that'll take years.

Elvis Presley has been gone nearly 34 years, but the love affair Las Vegas has had with him still continues, even as Las Vegas appears to be dying on the vine.

It's a really good article, published on Valentine's Day:

Greene remembers the Elvis of those first shows as a nice, lovable kid who simply wasn’t in his element with the dressed-up nightclub crowd.

Wearing “a baseball jacket,” Presley looked like he had just wandered in “from the parking lot,” Greene recalls. Greene told Presley’s manager, Col. Tom Parker, that Elvis needed to dress to impress Las Vegas.

Greene even made fun of his opening act, drawing loud laughter from the audience. Presley laughed along with them.

But not everyone who saw the show thought Elvis was joke fodder.

“Bing Crosby was in the audience, and he told me Elvis would be the biggest star in show business,” Greene says. “Evidently, he saw something I didn’t see.”

More Laziness

It cost me $50 to buy a new bicycle tire which is thick enough goatheads can't pierce the casing and cause flats. Yesterday I was out cycling around Sparks, and I picked up one of those goatheads. Instead of taking the "thorn" out of the tire and thus causing an immediate flat tire, I continued to ride around until I got home and then replaced the old tire and inner tube. I try to cycle for at least two hours at a time, and preferably longer.

I have been riding a lot on the Truckee River Bike Path or Trail, and then going to other places from there, simply because I don't have to mess with the traffic that much on the weekdays, yet I can still get a good workout. In years past, I would take the McCarran loop most of the way around, but because of construction and because of boredom, I have gotten tired to doing that, so I am going different routes and different places.

As I was returning home today on the trail, I saw a beautiful, beautiful buck running along the Truckee River. He saw me and looked up. How I wish I had my camera. He was a beauty.

Just as I said I would, I picked up the book, Deconstructing Sammy, which I briefly mentioned yesterday. God, what a mess the Sammy Davis, Jr. estate is in. And there aren't any angels in this saga, either.

I have read the first fifty pages already. It'll probably take no more than one or two days to read.

More about Davis's sad story is here.
