It has been publicized Fritzl had a prior criminal record, and now there is talk of him being possibly involved in an unsolved murder.

The girl looked much like Elisabeth, and Fritzl's wife owned a bed-and-breakfast business near where the body was found in 1986.

I guess Austrian law is similar to the United States in that every accused person has a right to a defense, no matter how utterly improbable and absurd:

But Mr Mayer said: “From now on he is not speaking to the police. He will not say a single word. The allegations of rape and enslaving people have not been proved.

“We need to reassess the confessions made so far. He is a shattered and ruined man. He is emotionally broken.”

Mr Mayer’s comments suggest Fritzl may claim that he had a consensual relationship with Elisabeth and that he looked after her and the resulting children well.

Oh, God almighty. It was such a "consensual relationship," beginning when Elisabeth was a mere 11 years old, she tried to run away twice, and, after the second time, he handcuffed her, drugged her, and tossed her into the dungeon so they could continue to have their "consensual" relationship.

Fritzl concealed the dungeon by way of a labyrinth of five basement rooms, according to this article:

It was revealed that detectives had to break into five rooms in the basement of the 73-year-old's rambling house to reach a 660lb reinforced concrete door which led to the cellar where Elisabeth and her three children were incarcerated.

Police then had to take down shelves before they could operate a remote control device the retired electrician had rigged up so that only he could open the dungeon door's complex locking mechanism.

Once inside, horrified officers found that each of the dungeon's five rooms also had doors which could be locked or barred by the family's jailor.

There were also appliances in the dungeon, including a freezer and a washing machine.
