It reeks, pure and simple.
Elizabeth was quite pissed off when she first heard about it:
"This is really, really tough," she said.
In a statement provided to The Associated Press, Elizabeth Edwards called her husband's affair was a "terrible mistake." But she said the healing process was "oddly made somewhat easier" after her diagnosis of breast cancer in March 2007.
She said she was proud of the courage her husband showed despite his shame and pleaded for her family's privacy to be respected.
In his interview with ABC News, Edwards recalled his wife's reaction to the news in 2006.
"She was mad, she was angry. I think furious would be a good way to describe it," Edwards said.
I think JRE's political future is shot down the tubes.
It isn't the affair that was the problem; it was the covering up of it that was the problem.
Update: Thanks to commenter Mary Louise for alerting me to this angle of the story:
As things go, I knew someone who knew The Woman and was privately aware of her claims even before the National Enquirer started pushing this story. Neither of us know what the truth of The Baby is... just what The Woman was telling everyone who would listen.
Sadly, this all become a very destructive episode of "The Moment of Truth" in which she took the money at a couple hundred thousand (from the Enquirer) because she knew she couldn't get the big money for answering the next question, "Is it John Edwards baby?" with a "Yes." that would pass the lie detector.
And for Edwards' part, he wouldn't pay the blackmailer. He was just pig enough to cheat on his wife with a too easily available woman (is this a southern politician thing?) and fool enough to show up at The Beverly Hills Hotel himself, probably because it was The Woman's "last demand" and he arrogantly thought he was about to clear the problem away, once and for all, never to be more than Page 22 of The Enquirer, at worst.
It sounds plausible.

Susan,
Remember this story was first reported by the Huffington Post, HQ of the Obama Cult.
I forgot about that, Mary Louse. It's just too coincidental. Edwards could try and split hairs on the original Enquirer story by denying the paternity, and that could be true. But still, somebody had the info from somewhere to leak to the Enquirer or HuffPo.
It reeks. I remember the Senate campaign in 2004, where the Republican Ryan had to be forced out of the race because of salacious details regarding his divorce. Who leaked it out? Do I need to say more?
Obama's campaign may be unscrupulous, but they will be no match for the GOP.
Note to troll: I don't like deleting messages, but I am not going to put up with Obama campaign b.s. on this blog.
People who support him are welcome to comment, but I won't allow talking points.
Susan,
More evidence pointing to the HuffPo angle.

The John Edwards thing has been an open secret in "Hollywood' for a long time. The Woman involved was attempting to blackmail Edwards on this for almost a year.

So she was telling everybody in Beverly Hills. Arianna is part of the Beverly Hills social circle. She is also a cog in the wheel of the Obama Cult. Her website was the first to report this. Just connect the dots.
Isn't that something, Mary Louise. If you don't mind, I'll post your link so that readers will see it.
Susan, sure go ahead.
You should also post the link to Make them Accountable about the Clinton campaign emails being leaked.

The One is just another corrupt Chicago Machine politician. There is a pattern to all this.
