The Education Wars

More drivel by two people who don't know shit about education but merely repeat the mantra from organized corporate interests:

Most people do not know that there are many charter schools with union teachers. In fact, one of the pioneers of the movement was Albert Shanker, the legendary head of the American Federation of Teachers.

The fact is charter schools are public schools, they serve our children, they use our tax dollars and our facilities, and they are required to meet the same statewide academic standards of traditional public schools.

Charter schools don't have a good record overall. The problems with education stem from bad, corrupt leadership from school districts and because of the lack of a civil service-style system for school districts. I would propose such a statewide system for school district employees. With teachers, ranking them on the basis of test scores for their licensing exams plus experience and then putting them on an eligibility list for whichever region teachers want to work ala the federal civil service system would get rid of patronage/nepotism and reduce age discrimination in hiring. Testing/experience ranking systems for classified employees would also be implemented in my scheme.
