In the old days, the party actually tried to work with Democrats by finding some common ground. But ever since the birchers took over the Republican Party and put Ronald Reagan in the White House, neoliberal economic policies have wrecked this country's economy.
There is no hope for the GOP. There is almost no hope for the Democratic Party, thanks to neoliberal infiltration there.
