and totally ridiculous given the fact most of the people voting were likely too young to remember truly monumental events such as the JFK assassination and the moon landing.
The JFK tragedy not only was a national event but an international event, largely because television, then still relatively young, brought the world together. There were not 1000 stations of trash back then; almost everybody watched television over the air, with three networks as their "choice." How anybody could place any other event over this one is a mystery except for the fact those who were surveyed were not even around when it happened.
The television coverage of the JFK assassination is the most significant in the history of the medium. Television was said to have "come of age" during those four dark days in November of 1963. The network coverage remains the standard by which all other broadcasts should be judged against. I don't believe any journalist would disagree with this view. It was the absolute high point in the history of broadcast journalism.
9/11 certainly belongs in the top five, but I cannot take any list seriously that does not have the two events mentioned above in the top five or even the top two slots.
The Challenger explosion hardly merits a mention on any top ten list, let alone in the top five. Why isn't the Columbia explosion also mentioned on the list, for that matter?
Where is the Nixon resignation and Watergate? Nary a mention.
There are lots of stupid celebrity events such as the royal wedding, O.J. Simpson, Whitney Houston, and so forth. How the hell can anybody take such a list seriously?
