Lola Montez Lake.

What is a Susan hike without pictures of wildflowers? These red ones are really interesting. I need to get a wildflower book to be able to identify the flowers that I come across on my hikes. I found out these guys are snow flowers.

This is a creek near the lake. I took a picture of it on my way back. It was MUCH faster coming back than going up to the lake.

Despite being eaten alive by mosquitoes, I was able to enjoy the beautiful meadow near the lake.

One more picture of the lake. It was seven miles round trip.

Another picture of the lake.

Another shot of the lake. The sky was pretty good overall. When I returned to Reno, there were thunderclouds.

One sad thing to note was that on my way to the trail, near Mogul or Verdi, there was a dog that had just been hit and nobody did a goddamned thing about him. He was dead. It looked like a Bernese Mountain Dog. Not only does it piss me off that the person who hit it just drove on, but that the owner of the dog didn't keep it confined. So often people go to work and leave their dogs in the backyard, not realizing the dogs can get out.

I also saw a deer up at Donner Pass that was trying to cross the freeway. It was a buck, and I hope he didn't get hit. The traffic was one lane up there because of construction, so people were slowing down.

I spent much of the day hiking on the Lola Montez Lake Trail, located just off the Interstate 80 freeway exit at Soda Springs in California. It took me perhaps 1 1/2 hours to hike the 3 1/2 miles one-way to the lake. One thing I forgot to do, though, was take insect repellent. Good God Almighty the mosquitoes about made mincemeat out of me. I learned my lesson. Next time I go to a lake I will take repellent with me. This lake is Lower Lola Montez Lake. I did not go to Upper Lola Montez Lake because of the mosquitoes. I understand it is even prettier than the lower lake.
