One-time congressman and running mate to 1996 GOP presidential nominee Bob Dole, Jack Kemp, has died at the age of 73 of cancer. He was popular for some of his economic ideas, despite the fact his ideas about taxes and economic growth were bunk.

In his previous life he was a professional football player for the Buffalo Bills. He believed this was good preparation for a life in politics:

“Pro football,” he replied, “gave me a good sense of perspective to enter politics: I’d already been booed, cheered, cut, sold, traded and hung in effigy.”
