Preakness Stuff

Here are the current odds in this year's Preakness Stakes, the 150th edition and the last under the current  grandstand.

Journalism shares the favorite odds with Goal Oriented. Journalism, of course, came in second in the Kentucky Derby to winner Sovereignty, who is not running today.  Obvious, there is no Triple Crown winner.

We  will see if this guy's prediction of today's race will come to pass.

Preakness Stakes 2022 Results

Early Voting (5-1) has won the 147th Preakness Stakes, winning by a length against favorite Epicenter.  Creative Minister was third.  The filly, Secret Oath, came in fourth.  The time was 1:54.54

It was the first Preakness win by jockey Jose Ortiz.  The trainer is Chad Brown.  Seth Klarman, owner of Cloud Computing, Preakness winner five years ago, is the owner of Early Voting.  This was the horse's first win in four starts.

He is not expected to run in the Belmont.

USA Today article

The race, courtesy of NBC Sports:

He is a son of Gun Runner, while his dam is Amour D'Ete, a daughter of Tiznow.  Yes, Secretariat is in the pedigree as he is in literally thousands of racehorses today.

Earlier:  With Rich Strike bypassing this race to run in the Belmont Stakes three weeks from today, here are the morning line odds for this year's Preakness.

Epicenter appears to be the favorite for today.  We will see if he delivers the goods.

Secretariat's record time in the Preakness is unlikely to be broken today.  Forensics proved beyond doubt he had set the record in 1973, and the Maryland Racing Commission accepted the findings in 2012.

Preakness Stakes 2021

I missed the live running by a bit because I went to the Oregon Coast today, but I caught the replay on YouTube.  Rombauer upset Medina Spirit to win the 146th Preakness Stakes.  Midnight Bourbon was second, ahead of a tiring Medina Spirit, who ran out of gas in the homestretch to place third.

Preakness winner War of Will in an earlier race

Bodexpress threw his jockey at the start of the race after bucking in the starting gate,  but he was okay after running the entire race without a rider.  Not only that, but he ran another lap before being caught by the outrider.  There is talk of refunding bettors over this incident.

Bodexpress's jockey, before he was thrown, was John Velazquez.  He was okay, too.

Meanwhile, War of Will, ridden by Tyler Gaffalione, won this year's running of the Preakness.  He won the race, unimpeded, in 1:54.34, way off Secretariat's record.    Everfast was second, and Owendale was third.

Favorite Improbable, trained by Bob Baffert, came in sixth.

Baltimore Sun has some early reporting.

The race from NBC Sports:

Not the first time a riderless horse was featured in a major race.  It happened in the 1967 Hollywood Gold Cup, featuring Native Diver and Pretense, the sire of Secretariat's rival Sham.  The race starts at around 3:10 in the video:

Justify is the heavy favorite looking for his fifth win in five starts today.  Like the Kentucky Derby, the track is a sloppy mess.  There are only eight horses in the field.

Results:  In the thick, thick fog,  Justify held off Good Magic in a really exciting race and pulled it off from late challengers Bravazo and Tenfold to win this edition's Preakness.  Good Magic came in fourth.

The time was 1:55.93.

There may be more challengers in the Belmont because Justify had to hold off the late chargers.  He didn't win as easily this time.

NYT:

On Saturday, it was Justify, also trained by Baffert, who defeated Bravazo by two-fifths of a length to win the 143rd Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course to set up a shot at the Triple Crown at the Belmont Stakes in New York in three weeks. It was Justify’s fifth victory in five tries and his third on a wet track. Tenfold was third; Good Magic was fourth.

From the horse's mouth so to speak, meaning NBC Sports:

Preakness Stakes 2017 (Updated)

Always Dreaming, the Kentucky Derby winner, is the favorite at 8-5. Classic Empire is the next choice at 2-1.

Some picks are here. A lot of people like Classic Empire.

Update: Cloud Computing committed an upset to take over Classic Empire at the wire to win this year's Preakness. He did not run in the Kentucky Derby. Javier Castellano was the jockey, while turf trainer Chad Brown won his first Triple Crown race.

Senior Investment was third, while LookinatLee was fourth.

Always Dreaming finished way up in the pack. He finished eighth.

The time was 1:55.98, way off Secretariat's record. Exacta paid $98.40.

Video to follow when available.

Cloud Computing is a grandson of A.P. Indy, a great sire and the most influential descendant of the Bold Ruler line. A.P. Indy won the 1992 Belmont Stakes and Breeders' Cup Classic. He is a son of Seattle Slew out of Weekend Surprise, a daughter of Secretariat. He is Bold Ruler through and through. A.P. Indy is still hugely influential, especially through his grandson Tapit.

Preakness 2016 Results Updated With Video

Exaggerator avenged his defeat in the Kentucky Derby by winning in the slop in this year's Preakness Stakes. Cherry Wine was second. Nyquist seemed to run out of gas in the homestretch. The pace was very fast at the beginning of the race, and he may have burned out. He finished third. It was the latter's first loss in his career.

No Triple Crown winner this year.

Jockey Kent Desormeaux and his brother Keith are among the connections of Exaggerator, who did very well in the Derby two weeks ago. Kent, for those few of you who have read my blog over the years will remember, was the jockey who in 2008 piloted Big Brown to victory in the Derby and Preakness but then eased his horse in the Belmont, apparently the horse having some kind of foot injury or shoe problem.

I met Kent in 2008 at the opening of Bodine's casino in Carson City when he came out of the men's room. He autographed a cap for me.

The race:

More is here.

Earlier today, Homeboykris, a 9-year-old gelding, collapsed and died after winning a race. He suffered from a cardiovascular collapse.

A four-year-old filly, Preymeda, broke down and fell in an undercard today and had to be put down on the track.

Worse still the owners of this filly owned Barbaro, who broke down in the 2006 Preakness and died early in 2007 from laminitis complications.

I don't care what the animal "rights" whackos say, these people treat these horses like they are pets.

Preakness 2013

The winner of this year's Preakness Stakes is 15-1 longshot Oxbow, with "elderly jockey" Gary Stevens aboard. Favorite Orb finished fourth. This win was the third for Stevens, and the sixth for trainer D. Wayne Lukas. It is the eighth Preakness win for Calumet Farm, which has new black and gold silks instead of the famous devil's red and blue silks because Calumet was sold last year.

Oxbow lead from start to finish, the first horse to do so since Aloma's Ruler did it in 1982.

The time was 1:57.2, way off Secretariat's record.

ItsMyLuckyDay finished second, while MyLute finished third.

Orb came into the race in good shape, but he didn't like his position in the field. He was boxed in and lost momentum.

No Triple Crown winner for another year at least.

The video (we will see how long it stays up on YouTube):

Earlier: Kentucky Derby winner Orb is the favorite for today's race.

The record time for the Preakness is 1:53 set by Secretariat in 1973, just as he set the records in the Derby and Belmont. He wasn't awarded the time until 39 years later, after decades of controversy, when forensic analysis proved beyond all doubt he broke the record set by Canonero II in 1971.

Farma Way continues to hold the track record.

And the Winner Is...

Shackleford, who edged out favorite Animal Kingdom to win the 136th running of the Preakness Stakes. Third was Astrology, and Dailed In finished fourth.

Once again there will be NO Triple Crown winner.

The time was 1:56.27 for the race.

Blood Horse also has a story and video of the race.

The 1982 Preakness, won by Aloma's Ruler, is inexplicably not up on any file sharing site. Let's hope somebody puts it up.

Gate Dancer 1984, but nobody has posted the video yet on YouTube, etc.

Tank's Prospect, 1985, here.

Snow Chief 1986, not on YouTube.

Alysheba 1987, ditto. People on YouTube are falling down on the job.

Pine Bluff 1992:

Prairie Bayou 1993. The 1993 series is especially tragic, for Union City broke down in this race and had to be put down. Even more heartbreaking was the winner's owners talked about how bad they felt for Union City's connections when they were in the winner's circle, but just three weeks later, Prairie Bayou broke down in the Belmont Stakes and had to be euthanized. He was a gelding. It was just tragic that year. I have a hard time watching this race and the 1993 Belmont:

Tobasco Cat 1994:

Timber Country 1995:

Louis Quatorze 1996:

Silver Charm 1997. This was one hell of a race, nearly a three-way tie, and from one of the better foal crops in recent years:

Preakness Stakes.

Before I head out the door this morning to go to the Democratic convention at the Grand Sierra, I thought I'd post a few links to today's Preakness Stakes, where Big Brown is the favorite.

USA Today always has good links for the major horse races.

Questions have been raised about Big Brown's soundness, something that had better be addressed. I don't want to see any more reruns of what happened after this year's Kentucky Derby.

Speaking of Big Brown, he breezed earlier this morning in preparation of the race.
