NYT Editorial

Today the Times editorialized about the worsening unemployment situation.

It is a good editorial overall, but I do take issue with this paragraph:

That means that in addition to providing relief for today’s unemployed, greater emphasis must be placed on job training and retraining and on better education at all levels. If a job slump is short and shallow, old jobs come back. If it is long and deep, like the current one, some old jobs never return and even some industries never revive. That makes it imperative to prepare as a nation for the prospect of a vastly different future.

The solution is NOT "retraining," especially for jobs that don't exist or have a huge glut of applicants. The solution is not to go into thousands upon thousands in debt for jobs that will not be there when students graduate. The solution IS to reverse three decades of tax policy favoring the few at the expense of the many and to reverse the "outsourcing" of jobs to third world countries and uncut wages and salaries here by penalizing companies that do it.

The Raleigh News Observer hopes issues of importance will be raised in the waning days of the presidential campaign.

I note this:

Both Obama and McCain have been thoroughly "vetted" by the American people, who know their life stories and know them both to be people of fine character. Since they have both acknowledged that in each other, they should stick to talking about the things that really matter.

Actually, the public hasn't "vetted" in the case of Obama due in large part to the deliberate negligence of the news media, which are either afraid of appearing racist or are helping be a part of making history. Unfortunately voters, especially Democrats, are being sold a pig in a poke and will likely regret it if he gets elected.

The problem with this editorial, of course, is supposedly the Republicans are guilty of this. However, the Obama campaign remains far more guilty than the McCain campaign.

Because the media are so afraid of being tagged with the "racist" label, they seem paralyzed with the thought of criticizing Obama AT ALL, but they have NO compunction of going after McCain and Palin.

The Alaska Daily News channels Orwell in its description this morning of Sarah Palin's Troopergate troubles. She is claiming she has been vindicated, although the facts show no such thing:

In plain English, she did something "unlawful." She broke the state ethics law.

The Baltimore Sun asks if Palin is this way in Alaska, how would she behave in Washington?

To which I ask the nation's media: If you are scrutinizing every little and major thing Sarah Palin does, WHY hasn't Barack Obama been vetted?

I have seen NUMEROUS editorials like this one from the Buffalo News chastising John McCain's campaign because it dares to go negative, but not ONE goddamned word was EVER uttered by the news media about Obama's filthy tactics against other Democratic candidates in the primaries, namely Hillary Clinton.

Not one word.

Obama has NOT run a clean campaign. McCain's criticisms have been extremely mild compared to other campaigns.

By the way, where was the media outrage in 2000? In 2004? Hell, where was the outrage when the GOP right persecuted the Clintons during the 1990s? The media were strangely silent if not actively encouraging it.

It is indeed topsy-turvy.

If editors are going to write editorials, they need to get the goddamned facts straight, especially when it comes to the so-called "right to die."

A "right," which translated, means the right to kill, for it is almost always the elderly, the ill, and the disabled who are the targets.

Kevorkian is far more than an "eccentric." He's a fucking serial murderer made into a folk hero by people who should know better.

Oh, and Terri Schiavo wasn't "brain dead." Not even her "husband" and his crackpot attorney ever made that claim.
